The greatest threat to birds and their habitats is humans – but paradoxically it is only humans that have the means and the creativity to reverse threats, to cope with them and to eventually improve the lot of threatened species. First though, they need to have the will to do so. CEPA: four letters that stand for the important task of communicating threats to birds and their habitats, and to educate people about these threats, to allow them to participate in related activities and to raise awareness. A huge task, and a task which starts with the young people, the future of humankind and of nature.
In this spirit on May 3rd an excursion of the 11th grade of the German School Seoul International (Deutsche Schule Seoul International) took place to the East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) office and the nearby bird habitats in Songdo, organized by Hanns-Seidel-Foundation Korea. At the EAAFP office, excellent communication officer Vivian Fu gave an overview over bird flyways, the East Asian-Australasian Flyway in particular, threats to birds on the Flyway and ways to cooperate for a better protection. Afterwards, the students Black-Faced Spoonbills and their habitat at Namdong reservoir and the remaining tidal flats in the incredibly pressed tidal flats that lie between Songdo and Sorae.
