새로운 영화축제를 위한 어린이 번역가들의 손길
부산에서 시작되는 새로운 영화축제인 “부산기후변화대책 영화제”가 11월 1일 토요일부터 개최한다. ‘고기의 진실(Meat the Truth)’, ‘빙하를 쫓아서(Chasing Ice)’, ‘소에 관한 음모(Cowspiracy)’, 이 세 편의 영화를 지역민들의 편의를 위해 부산대학교 일대, 경성대학교 일대, 남포동, 세 곳에서 모두 상영할 것이다.
부산기후변화대책 (Busan Climate Action)이라는 부산 지역의 새로운 NGO그룹이 주관하는 이 지역 새 영화제의 주제는 바로 “무제한(The sky is the limit)”. 여기에 실력 있는 어린 번역가 팀의 힘이 더해졌다.
또한 세 편의 영화들은 한국의 주류와 미국 중심의 영어권 미디어에 부족한 현재의 정보들을 폭넓게 제공하기 위해 선택되었다.
왜 기후 변화와 같은 매우 어려운 주제로 영화제를 개최하는가에 대한 질문에 이 행사 코디네이터인 윤선경(Sunny)씨는 다음과 같이 설명한다; “기후변화의 징후와 결과가 세계 곳곳에서 나타나고 있고 한국에서 또한 식생대와 생태계 및 기후변화의 과정을 확인할 수 있음에도 불구하고 불행히도 많은 한국인들이 아직 기후 변화를 주요 사안으로 인식하지 못하고 있는 것같습니다.”
첫 번째 영화는 아주 영향력이 있는 고전으로 기후 변화를 부인하는 사람들이 미국 전 부통령 앨고어(Al Gore)의 지구 온난화에 관련한 연설에 대해 오랫 동안 비난해 오고 있는 것에 반해, 이 네덜란드 영화 ‘고기의 진실(Meat the Truth) 2008’은 축산업이 탄소발자국에 끼치는 영향을 무시하고 있는 앨고어를 비판하며 그 이유를 재미있고도 쉽게 따라갈 수 있도록 시각적으로 설명해 준다.
다른 두 영화들은 미국에서 제작된 것이지만 ‘빙하를 쫓아(Chasing Ice) 2012’의 경우 대부분이 그린랜드와 알라스카에서 촬영되었으며 그곳에서 과학자들은 촬영을 위해 놀라운 속도로 녹고 있는 빙하에 자신들의 목숨을 걸었다. 실제로 자신들이 카메라에 담은 것은 경외심 그 이상의 것을 불러일으킨다. 이전부터 기후 변화를 부인해 오던 한 사람이 이 영화를 관람한 후 자신의 소감에서 털어놓았듯이 이것은 인생을 바꿀 만한 영화다.
부산기후변화대책활동 회원이자 부산대학교 일대에서 ‘빙하를 쫓아(Chasing Ice)’ 상영을 주관할 앤드류 티터(Andrew Teeter)는 양산에서 원어민교사로 일하고 있다. 그에게 왜 부산 시민들이 이 영화를 봐주기를 바라는가를 질문 하자, “지구가 우리 인간으로인해 영구적으로 변해버렸기 때문입니다. 그러나 더욱 중요한 것은 이런 문제점들이 계속 가속화되어 가고 있다는 것입니다.”라고 했다. 앤드류 티터는 11월 15일 영화 상영 이후, 이어질 토론 시간을 주관할 것이다. 영어와 한국어로 진행되는 토론시간은 영화를 감상한 후, 자신들의 의견을 나누고 더 많은 것을 배우고자 하는 관람객들을 위해 열릴 것이다.
‘소에 관한 음모(Cowspiracy : The Sustainability Secret)’는 2014년 신작이며 이 영화제의 폐막작이다. 이 영화 속의 카메라는 주요 환경단체 대표들에게 축산업의 환경적 영향에 관한 기본적인 질문들을 꼬치꼬치 캐묻는 한 기자를 따라다닌다. 환경단체 대표들의 응답들은 본의 아니게 재미있으면서도 한편 우리 마음을 불편하게 한다.
윤선경(Sunny)씨는 전체적으로 세 영화들이 현대 사회에서 직면한 가장 거대한 시련에 관한 어려운 주제들을 흥미로우면서도 긍정적인 방법으로 제시하고 있다고 말한다. “매우 이례적인 영화주제와 관람비를 한 잔 정도의 음료수 가격이라는 파격적인 제안에도 불구하고 상영 지정장소의 사장님들께서 영화상영 개최 준비에대한 즉각적이고 긍정적인 응답을 주셨고 영화 ‘빙하를 쫓아(Chasing Ice)’를 제 학생들이 기꺼이 번역하여 많은 한국인들이 관람하고 이해할 수 있도록 한국어 자막을 다는 일을 가능하게 해주었습니다.

The Busan Climate Action film festival launches Saturday, 1st of November with the first of three entertaining and life changing films, all playing at three locations around the city.
The Busan Climate Action Film Festival kicks off on Saturday, November 1st nearby Pusan National University. Event coordinator Ms. “Sunny” Sunkyeong Yun (Birds Korean) describes the movies and locations as carefully spaced out around the city and throughout the weeks, saying, “With convenient locations in Pusan National University, Kyungsung University, and Nampo Dong, everyone can find a time and place to see these three fantastic films.” She adds that the three movies were also selected to offer a range of information currently lacking in mainstream Korean and US-centric English language media. Meat the Truth, Chasing Ice, and Cowspiracy will screen at all three locations, including near Busan National University, Kyungsung University, and in Nampo Dong.
Asked why holding a film festival on such a difficult subject as climate change, Sunny Yun explains: “Unfortunately not many Koreans are aware of climate change as an issue, even though it is a worldwide problem, and I’ve already seen the signs — the consequences — of the process of climate change here in Korea. Definitely summer got warmer; the vegetation has changed, for example apple pears (or peh) used to only grow down south of the country.” Sunny Yun is co-hosting all three film screenings upstairs in Cafe Bridge in Nampo Dong on Wednesday nights, 7-9pm.
The first film is one Sunny Yun describes as a personal favorite. While climate change deniers have long decried Al Gore for addressing global warming, the instant classic and Dutch-made movie Meat the Truth (2008) criticizes the former US Vice-President for his ignoring the livestock industry’s contribution to carbon footprint, and clearly explains the reasons in entertaining and easy-to-follow visuals.
The other two movies were made in the USA, but Chasing Ice (2012) was filmed largely in Greenland, Iceland, and Alaska, where scientists risked their lives to film the surprising speed at which glaciers now melt. They expect to see some movement over long periods, but what they catch on film is more than awe-inspiring: it is, as one previous climate change denier confessed, life changing.
Andrew Teeter is another member of Busan Climate Action and host of the screening of Chasing Ice at PNU’s long-popular Crossroads on Saturdays 7-9pm. Asked why he wanted to watch and show the movie for the general public of Busan, the Yangsan-based English teacher explains: “I want people to see this film because the earth has permanently changed because of humans. But more importantly, the problems are always accelerating.” Andrew will host a discussion session following the movie playing on November 15th. Discussion sessions in English and Korean will be held after every screening for viewers wanting to reflect on the films and learn more.
Near Kyungsung University all movies are being hosted by Busan Climate Action’s founding member Ryan Hofer. Asked what led him to start the group and host the film festival, Ryan explains: “Chasing Ice was part of my journey to realizing how immediate climate change has become. The images and sounds connected me to what is happening right now. We’re losing the glaciers; they’ll be drastically reduced over the next decade, and we’ll never get them back. I think the movie does a good job of confronting viewers with the reality of how much humans are changing the Earth, and how scary that process is. Hopefully people will see the film and be motivated to press for immediate changes in their society.” The films in KSU are being screened in Table Talk Cafe on Saturdays, 3-5pm.
Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a new release for 2014 and the final title in the festival. It follows an inquisitive reporter asking simple questions about the environmental impact of the livestock industry to representatives of leading environmental organisations. Responses are both unintentionally amusing and unfortunately disturbing.
Overall, Sunny Yun says the three movies present the difficult subject of modern society’s greatest challenge in interesting and positive ways. She explains: “This positivity was reflected both in the hosts of the venues who all responded instantly that they would be prepared to host the film screenings despite the unusual theme and for only the price of at least one drink per customer; and then again, also in my students who agreed to help translate the film Chasing Ice into Korean for the subtitles.”
