The Inspiration
In an effort to better communicate the work that Birds Korea is doing and upgrade our communication for the AI age, I’m working with Dr Moores, Dr Ha Jungmoon and Ms Angela Choi to make our website, more data rich, interactive and helpful. Thanks to the wonderful eBird observation dataset, I spent a couple of hours putting together a small interactive page that displays the birds that occur in Republic of Korea (South Korea). It can be accessed from the link below.
For species with sufficient eBird data, an interactive species map is also available that shows observations of the species, distribution of historical record, occurrence by month of year and some additional information. The basic layout of this interactive map was provided by Dr Jungmoon Ha (regional coordinator for eBird ROK).
The idea to create such a resource is the result of a conversation with Dr Moores about how Birds Korea can be useful to everybody. Be it someone who is working on research and conservation, someone visiting RoK and wants to look for birds or someone who is curious about what birds occur here and where to find them.
This is still very much a work in progress and hope we can work with more like-minded people to it make this page useful, enjoyable and accessible to all.

If EOD data is available for that species (about 513 out of the total 627 species), an interactive map can be seen upon clicking the name of the species
It gives additional information like at what time of the year they occur and frequency of observations over the year (since eBird is a growing community in Korea, the numbers are usually increasing over the years but this doesn’t indicate that the species themselves are getting more common).
