Birds News from Jason Loghry<\/strong><\/p>\n

Throughout the course of last week, I spent a few of my afternoons on the east bank of the Nakdong River. As many of you may know, the landscape has been subjected to numerous changes, many of which are ongoing, most of which give public access to these once inaccessible reed beds, marshes, and shallow freshwater ponds.<\/p>\n

On one hand, it is exciting to explore these new parks in hopes of finding out more about the native species that this rich habitat support. On the other hand, it’s easy for me to feel uncomfortable considering the added pressure contributed simply by my presence. Searching for Yellow and Von Schrenck’s Bittern, which I believe were once more easily seen near the estuary and just upstream, again I found myself unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

Species of highlighted interest include:<\/p>\n

Chinese Pond Heron<\/strong> Ardeola bacchus<\/em>, two observed together on June 19; one in breeding plumage, the other in “non-breeding type” plumage
\nBlack-winged Stilt<\/strong> Himantopus himantopus<\/em>, one observed in a marsh adjacent to a reclaimed area currently under construction
\nLong-tailed Shrike<\/strong> Lanius schach<\/em>, one observed on the evening of June 20; first summer record on the mainland?
\nCommon Cuckoo<\/strong> Cuculus canorus<\/em>, on different dates, two seen in flight near reed beds
\nKorean Water Deer<\/strong> H. i. argyropus<\/em>, doe with fawn
\nAmur Leopard Cat<\/strong> P. b. euptilurus<\/em> <\/p>\n

\"Chinese<\/a>non-breeding type Chinese Pond Heron<\/strong> Ardeola bacchus<\/em>, \u00a9 Jason Loghry<\/center><\/p>\n

Common Pheasant<\/strong> Phasianus colchicus<\/em>, several seen with chicks
\nMandarin Duck<\/strong> Aix galericulata<\/em>, a few seen on the same shallow ponds, appearing to be in moult
\nSpot-billed Duck<\/strong> Anas zonorhyncha<\/em>
\nEurasian Coot<\/strong> Fulica atra<\/em>
\nCommon Moorhen<\/strong> Gallinula chloropus<\/em>
\nBlack-crowned Night Heron<\/strong> Nycticorax nycticorax<\/em>, most common of the small herons
\nStriated Heron<\/strong> Butorides striata<\/em>
\nGrey Heron<\/strong> Ardea cinerea<\/em>
\nGreat Egret<\/strong> Ardea alba<\/em>
\nCommon Kestrel<\/strong> Falco tinnunculus<\/em>
\nEurasian Hobby<\/strong> Falco subbuteo<\/em>, 4 observed on June 17, after a day of heavy rain; hundreds of dragonflies present
\nLittle Ringed Plover<\/strong> Charadrius dubius<\/em>
\nRufous Turtle Dove<\/strong> Streptopelia orientalis<\/em>
\nPacific Swift<\/strong> Apus pacificus<\/em>, 50+ near dusk on June 17
