Bird News from Robin Newlin<\/strong><\/p>\n

First off the boat on the 7th, the island seemed pretty birdy (also many many bird photographers). A list to augment (before and after) Tim Edelsten\u2019s.<\/p>\n

One Bluethroat<\/strong> in the pond. Also in the pond, several Red-throated Pipits<\/strong>, a few Pallas\u2019 Reed Buntings<\/strong>, a Black-winged Stilt<\/strong>, a Long-toed Stint<\/strong>, 2 Marsh Sandpipers<\/strong>, 2 Wood Sandpipers<\/strong>. and (for brief interludes) a White-bellied Waterhen<\/strong>. The Orange-headed Thrush<\/strong> discovered and photographed by Dr. Nial Moores was still present and much visited by many pilgrims.<\/p>\n

Near the (other) temple, one White’s Thrush<\/strong> and several Pale Thrushes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A Chinese Nuthatch<\/strong> (May 8) and a Northern Hawk Cuckoo<\/strong> (the latter mostly heard only) made for an interesting juxtaposition.<\/p>\n

Much anticipated rain was followed by heavy fog: and very small numbers of new arrivals. A Long-tailed Shrike<\/strong> appeared to be fresh in on a slope near the ocean: the bird worked its way toward town and pond during the next several days.<\/p>\n

A Curlew Sandpiper<\/strong> appeared first on harbor concrete and then near the vegetable garden puddles, where it feasted on enormous earthworms.<\/p>\n

As on Gageo, encouraging numbers of Siskins<\/strong>. A small flock of Bramblings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Also: one Forest Wagtail<\/strong>, small numbers of Mugimaki<\/strong>, Narcissus<\/strong>, Yellow-rumped<\/strong>, Streaked<\/strong>, and Brown Flycatchers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Good numbers (c. 25) of Rufous-tailed Robin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The same for Tristram\u2019s Bunting<\/strong> and (to a lesser degree: maybe 10) Yellow-browed Bunting<\/strong>. Woodpecker holes in the old trees near the temple presaged 2 Greater Spotted Woodpeckers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Very few Chestnut Buntings<\/strong>. A small flock of Little Buntings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During the slow days of alternating fog and sun, a few additions, e.g. a cracking Yellow Bittern<\/strong>, a crackinger Common Kingfisher<\/strong>, several Chinese Grosbeak<\/strong> and 2 Hawfinches<\/strong>. Some raptor movement as described by T.E.<\/p>\n
