The northern lagoons, Hwajinpo Lagoon and Songji Lagoon were mostly ice free by the second weekend of March, apart from the northern end of Hwajinpo were 10 <strong>White-tailed Eagles<\/strong> were seen. There have been thousands of ducks in Hwajinpo Lagoon during the second half of March, especially <strong>Mallards<\/strong> and <strong>Tufted Ducks<\/strong>.&nbsp; On 26 March I saw 2 <strong>Spotted Redshanks<\/strong> at Hwanjinpo Lagoon, the first of the spring migration.<\/p>\n<p>\nOn March 27 at Namdae Cheon I saw a <strong>Hooded Crane<\/strong> fly upstream then back towards the coast. Then on March 30 at Nam Cheon near Ganseong I saw 22 Hooded Cranes foraging in rice fields.&nbsp; I found 15 more on in the same area on April 3.&nbsp; I hadn&#8217;t seen cranes before in this part of Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\nThere have been mixed flocks of <strong>Rooks<\/strong> and <strong>Daurian Jackdaws<\/strong> migrating north during most of March.&nbsp; And more than 1000 <strong>White-fronted Geese<\/strong> have been foraging in rice fields near Nam Cheon, including about 1600 on April 3.<\/p>\n<p>\nSome other firsts included a <strong>Common Redshank<\/strong> and a <strong>Eurasian Curlew<\/strong> at Cheongcho lagoon in Sokcho on March 27.&nbsp; The curlew was foraging on the sand flat amongst the <strong>Black-tailed Gulls<\/strong> and <strong>Great Cormorants<\/strong>.&nbsp; On April 3 I saw the first <strong>Barn Swallow<\/strong> at Nam Cheon and <strong>Siberian Stonechat<\/strong> at Songji Lagoon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charliesbirdblog.com\/~charlie\/birdskorea\/barryheinrichapril032011\/Eastern Great Egret 1-4z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"405\" alt=\"Eastern Great Egret\"><br \/><b>Eastern Great Egret<\/b> <i>Ardea modesta<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charliesbirdblog.com\/~charlie\/birdskorea\/barryheinrichapril032011\/Hooded Cranes 2-16z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"405\" alt=\"Hooded Cranes\"><\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charliesbirdblog.com\/~charlie\/birdskorea\/barryheinrichapril032011\/Hooded Cranes 3-2z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"384\" alt=\"Hooded Cranes\"><br \/><b>Hooded Cranes<\/b> <i>Grus monacha<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charliesbirdblog.com\/~charlie\/birdskorea\/barryheinrichapril032011\/Eurasian Curlew 1z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"341\" alt=\"Eastern Great Egret\"><br \/><b>Eurasian Curlew<\/b> <i>Numenuis arquatus<\/i>.<br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All photographs copyright Barry Heinrich<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bird news from Barry Heinrich The last month or so has seen the end of the winter chill and the beginning of spring migration.
