Bird News from Nial Moores<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five visits to (and eBird Checklists from) this hilly wooded park in eastern Busan, on 6th<\/sup><\/a>, 12th<\/sup><\/a>, 14th<\/sup><\/a>, 18th<\/sup><\/a> and 19th<\/sup><\/a> of April. Much less well-positioned to receive migrants than Taejongdae to the south, this park has more accessible though even more densely-vegetated habitat.  Like other coastal parks, although heavily disturbed in parts the quieter spots in Igidae can still hold lots of interesting birds in the right conditions, including good numbers of super-skulking thrushes (including Busan-breeding White\u2019s<\/strong>, Grey-backed<\/strong> and Pale<\/strong> and Japan-breeding Brown-headed<\/strong> and Grey<\/strong>) and robins.  At this time of year in Busan, as elsewhere along the south coast, “right conditions” mean: deep southwesterly winds to drift Japan-bound migrants northward; overcast skies with occasional rain or rain showers to keep dropping migrants near to the coast (and to reduce the number of human visitors!); and fairly limited visibility out to sea, to encourage birds to put off immediate departure. In total 72 species were logged during the five visits, including no less than eight with the prefix “Japanese” <\/a>in most checklists still (happily, not so in the Birds Korea checklist<\/a>, however!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few of the more notable species \/ high counts included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Wood Pigeon<\/strong> (\u201cJapanese Wood Pigeon\u201d) Columba janthina<\/em> \ud751\ube44\ub458\uae30. One heard crooning and seen briefly on 18th<\/sup>, followed on 19th<\/sup> by three: the original crooner and two together about 500 m to the south. This species is perhaps regular in Busan in April, with one record of over-summering and occasional autumn records too \u2013 most likely birds commuting between Ulleung Do where the species breeds and wintering areas to the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oriental Scops Owl<\/strong> Otus sunia<\/em> \uc18c\uca4d\uc0c8. One heard on 18th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ashy Minivet<\/strong> Pericrocotus divaricatus <\/em>\ud560\ubbf8\uc0c8\uc0ac\ucd0c. First on 6th;<\/sup>;  one on 12th<\/sup>;  three on 14th<\/sup>; and six on 18th<\/sup>. On 19th<\/sup>, an estimated 120 were found in three flocks and in several much smaller groups (with one of these flocks possibly containing Ryukyu based on calls). This is the highest count at this site; and the personal highest day count on the mainland.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japanese Waxwing<\/strong> Bombycilla japonica<\/em> \ud64d\uc5ec\uc0c8. One heard on 19th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dusky Warbler<\/strong> Phylloscopus fuscatus<\/em> \uc194\uc0c8\uc0ac\ucd0c. One heard on 18th<\/sup>. Although common along the west coast, rare in Busan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sakhalin Leaf Warbler<\/strong> Phylloscopus borealoides<\/em> \uc0ac\ud560\ub9b0\ub418\uc194\uc0c8.  Three singing on 18th<\/sup> and one singing on 19th<\/sup>, with several possible in among the 15 calling Pale-legged \/ Sakhalin heard on the former date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chestnut-cheeked Starling<\/strong> Agropsar philippensis<\/em> \uc1e0\ucc0c\ub974\ub808\uae30. Six on 19th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grey-backed Thrush <\/strong>Turdus hortulorum<\/em> \ub418\uc9c0\ube60\uadc0. Highest counts were 28 on 18th<\/sup> and 32 on 19th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brown-headed Thrush<\/strong> Turdus chrysolaus<\/em> \ubd89\uc740\ubc30\uc9c0\ube60\uadc0. Three on 18th<\/sup> and six on 19th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japanese Robin<\/strong> Larvivora akahige<\/em> \ubd89\uc740\uac00\uc2b4\uc6b8\uc0c8. Six on 12th<\/sup>; seven on 14th<\/sup>; four on 18th<\/sup>; and five on 19th<\/sup>, including one rather confiding male \u2013 which also unusually had a black chin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yellow-browed Bunting<\/strong> Emberiza chrysophrys \ub178\ub791\ub208\uc379\uba67\uc0c8 One on 12th. Generally very scarce in the southeast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yellow Bunting<\/strong> Emberiza sulphurata <\/em>\ubb34\ub2f9\uc0c8. One probable heard on 19th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masked Bunting<\/strong> Emberiza personata<\/em> \uc12c\ucd09\uc0c8 One on 14th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grey Bunting<\/strong> Emberiza variabilis<\/em> \uac80\uc740\uba67\uc0c8. At least two on 12th<\/sup>, including one in adult male plumage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
