Between January 4th and 26<sup>th<\/sup>, I therefore co-led two back-to-back tours for <a href=\"https:\/\/calidrisbirdingtours.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/calidrisbirdingtours.com\/\">Calidris Birding Tours<\/a> with Nick Upton, effectively conducting two 11-day circuits around much of the ROK, visiting many sites which sadly have been or are currently under threat of further extensive degradation (more on that in a separate post). and repeat visits, spaced more or less two weeks apart, to the National Arboretum; the Imjin River in Yeoncheon and the Han River at Paldang; the Hwaseong Wetlands; the Geum Estuary; Suncheon Bay; Junam Reservoir; the Nakdong Estuary (once, with an additional pre-tour visit on 3rd) and parkland-type habitats in Busan, including Gadeok do during the second visit; the Guryongpo Peninsula; the east coast, up to Daejin Harbour in the far north-east; the \u201cAsian Rosy-finch mountain\u201d; and the Southeast River, for close-up views <strong>of Scaly-sided Mergansers <\/strong>and<strong> Mandarin Ducks<\/strong>. Unfortunately, we were not in Gangneung the day of the Pallas\u2019s Sandgrouse (perhaps only the second national record, and the first since 1908!), and we did not have time to twitch the eastern Great Bustard in Cheorwon (approximately the fourth national record this century). Selected observations follow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Swan Goose<\/strong> <em>Anser cygnoides<\/em> \uac1c\ub9ac. Globally Vulnerable. Four in Seocheon and two at Junam during the first circuit; 26 were at the Geum Estuary and one was at Junam during the second.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Baikal Teal<\/strong> <em>Sibirionetta formosa<\/em> \uac00\ucc3d\uc624\ub9ac. \u00a0A very coarsely and perhaps conservatively (?) estimated 600,000 were on the Geum River both visits. Very few were seen away from there either visit. Widespread along the east coast, with a staggering concentration of 2,020 counted off from the January pension on 13<sup>th<\/sup>, and possibly \u2013 including these birds &#8211; up to 4,000 off the \u201cgreater Geojin headland\u201d the same day. Numbers seem to have fallen by the second visit, though c. 1,600 were off Ayajin on 23<sup>rd<\/sup>. \u00a0To put these numbers into context: the national count of this species in January 2022 was 2,710, with a national mean of c. 2,500 per winter during the past decade (MOE Census data 1999-2022 \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andreas-kim.de\/AKG\/MoE\/MoE.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.andreas-kim.de\/AKG\/MoE\/MoE.html\">Andreas Kim database<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/rs2000-rbmDSC02369-1024x774.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/rs2000-rbmDSC02369-1024x774.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/rs2000-rbmDSC02369-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/rs2000-rbmDSC02369-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/rs2000-rbmDSC02369-768x580.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/rs2000-rbmDSC02369-1536x1160.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/rs2000-rbmDSC02369.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Resting Red-breasted Merganser, Ayajin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scaly-sided Merganser<\/strong> <em>Mergus squamatus<\/em> \ud638\uc0ac\ube44\uc624\ub9ac. Globally Endangered. One at Paldang during both visits, with 10-20 along a short stretch of the South-east River both visits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hill Pigeon<\/strong> <em>Columba rupestris<\/em> \ub0ad\ube44\ub458\uae30. Nationally Critically Endangered. A dozen were seen in the Yeoncheon Imjin River Biosphere Reserve on 5th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eastern Water Rail<\/strong> <em>Rallus indicus<\/em> \ud770\ub208\uc379\ub738\ubd80\uae30. Two at Suncheon and four at Junam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Common Crane<\/strong> <em>Grus grus<\/em> \uac80\uc740\ubaa9\ub450\ub8e8\ubbf8. At least two at Suncheon and two at Junam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Great Crested Grebe<\/strong> <em>Podiceps cristatus<\/em> \ubfd4\ub17c\ubcd1\uc544\ub9ac. An extraordinary concentration of 5,965 were counted on the sea from the January pension during the first visit. This is more than twice the highest number recorded along a much greater length of coastline during the MOE census (MOE census 1999-2022; Andreas Kim database). This number had reduced to a few hundreds during the second visit, when 2,600 were on the sea off Ayajin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Horned Grebe<\/strong> <em>Podiceps auritus<\/em> \uadc0\ubfd4\ub17c\ubcd1\uc544\ub9ac. \u00a0Globally Vulnerable. In addition to several seen along the Guryongpo Peninsula, small numbers (1 to 3) of this highly localized species were also seen along the Daejin-Geojin coast, and also at Ayajin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spotted Redshank<\/strong> <em>Tringa erythropus<\/em> \ud559\ub3c4\uc694. One at the Hwaseong Wetlands on 19<sup>th<\/sup>. This now-scarce species used to be regular in the ROK during winter; and was locally common during migration along the west coast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Relict Gull<\/strong> <em>Ichthyaetus relictus<\/em> \uace0\ub300\uac08\ub9e4\uae30. Globally Vulnerable. One was in the Nakdong Estuary during the second circuit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Thick-billed Murre<\/strong> <em>Uria lomvia<\/em> \ud070\ubd80\ub9ac\ubc14\ub2e4\uc624\ub9ac. One was seen briefly from the boat (by Lee Collins only) on 13th, and two were seen (also briefly!) from land from the Geojin headland on 26<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spectacled Guillemot<\/strong> <em>Cepphus carbo<\/em> \ud770\ub208\uc379\ubc14\ub2e4\uc624\ub9ac. One was seen briefly from the boat (by NM only) on 13th, and a total of 27 were counted off from the Geojin headland on 26<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Long-billed Murrelet<\/strong> <em>Brachyramphus perdix<\/em> \uc54c\ub77d\uc1e0\uc624\ub9ac. Globally Near Threatened. Two were watched from the Okgye service station on 12th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Oriental Stork<\/strong> <em>Ciconia boyciana<\/em> \ud669\uc0c8. Globally Endangered. One unringed bird was seen in the Hwaseong Wetlands the first tour, and (thanks to information kindly provided by Dr Kim Shin-Hwan) seven were seen at Seosan lake A, including a mix of banded and unbanded birds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Greater Spotted Eagle<\/strong> <em>Clanga clanga <\/em>\ud56d\ub77c\uba38\ub9ac\uac80\ub3c5\uc218\ub9ac. Globally Vulnerable. One adult or near-adult at the Nakdong Estuary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Golden Eagle<\/strong> <em>Aquila chrysaetos<\/em> \uac80\ub3c5\uc218\ub9ac. A stunning juvenile, first photographed by Ms Lee Su-Young (Yeoncheon Birds Korea), was still present in the same area during our first visit to Yeoncheon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Steller\u2019s Sea Eagle<\/strong> <em>Haliaeetus pelagicus<\/em> \ucc38\uc218\ub9ac. Globally Vulnerable. One adult was at Paldang both visits, where seen brushing off several <strong>White-tailed Eagles<\/strong> (see image below). After a long run of poor winters for the species, a high count of five (or six) were seen in the Hwaseong Wetlands on 18th<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eurasian Hoopoe<\/strong> <em>Upupa epops<\/em> \ud6c4\ud22c\ud2f0. Increasingly recorded during the winter (and now assessed in winter as W4 by Birds Korea), including away from the stronghold of the southeast. One was well-watched at Junam on 10<sup>th<\/sup> (with images at: https:\/\/ebird.org\/checklist\/S125912078).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bearded Reedling<\/strong> <em>Panurus biarmicus<\/em> \uc218\uc5fc\uc624\ubaa9\ub208\uc774. \u00a0Fewer than five national records. One was heard but not seen by several in the group, all with experience of the species, in the Hwaseong Wetlands on 6<sup>th<\/sup> and 7<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Light-vented Bulbul<\/strong> <em>Pycnonotus sinensis<\/em> \uac80\uc740\uc774\ub9c8\uc9c1\ubc15\uad6c\ub9ac. \u00a0Increasing rapidly in the ROK, after the first record back in 2002. Although regular on the east coast north to at least Pohang for the past decade, small flocks were seen north to Daejin both visits; birds were also seen near to the west and south coasts too, and inland at Junam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Black-throated Thrush <\/strong><em>Turdus atrogularis<\/em> \uac80\uc740\ubaa9\uc9c0\ube60\uadc0. An adult female or 2cy male was seen in flight by several of the group, and briefly when perched by one lucky observer, in the Yeoncheon CCZ on 17th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Citrine Wagtail<\/strong> <em>Motacilla citreola<\/em> \ub178\ub791\uba38\ub9ac\ud560\ubbf8\uc0c8. One was seen well at Junam on 22nd.
