Bird news from Leslie Hurteau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interested to see what fall migration was like elsewhere in Korea this season, I took a weekend trip to Heuksan Island, a place well known for its migratory birds and even has its own research station for banding birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I arrived on the island Saturday afternoon and went straight for the fields and wetlands by Baenanggimi. Four Rooks<\/strong> were seen near the harbour enroute, as well as White Wagtails<\/strong>, Grey Herons<\/strong>, and plenty of gulls within the harbour (a mix of Black-tailed<\/strong>, Vega<\/strong>, and Mongolian<\/strong>, with likely others). The fields and wetland had plenty of Stejneger’s Stonechats<\/strong> (recently split to Amur Stonechats<\/strong>), and buntings (Pallas’s Reed<\/strong>, Rustic<\/strong>, and Black-faced<\/strong>). A Northern Goshawk<\/strong> was seen passing over the valley, and a Common Snipe<\/strong> was flushed while walking along some reeds. Up in a reservoir were a large number of Mandarin Ducks<\/strong>, as well as a pair of Little Grebes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day began before dawn, starting with two Common Snipe<\/strong> and a Common Sandpiper<\/strong> along a stream bed. A leisurely stroll along a channel in Jilli found Oriental Reed Warbler<\/strong>, Black-browed Reed Warbler<\/strong>, Pale Thrush<\/strong>, plenty of Amur Stonechats<\/strong>, Black-faced Buntings<\/strong>, Olive-backed Pipits<\/strong>, and Oriental Turtle Doves<\/strong>. Further in by a reservoir was a juvenile Black-crowed Night Heron<\/strong> and Tristram\u2019s Buntings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returning to the wetland in Baenanggimi afterwards, a nice selection of raptors were seen including Osprey<\/strong>, White-tailed Eagle<\/strong>, Northern Goshawks<\/strong>, Eurasian Sparrowhawk<\/strong>, and three Eastern Buzzards<\/strong>. Pallas’s Reed Bunting<\/strong> and Amur Stonechats<\/strong> were the predominate passerines in the area, but White Wagtails<\/strong>, Olive-backed Pipits<\/strong>, Daurian Redstarts<\/strong>, and one Yellow-browed Warbler<\/strong> were present as well. In another stream and farm area were a couple surprises, a female Chestnut Bunting<\/strong> and Siberian Rubythroat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not just the birds, but the insects were appealing as well. Chinese Mantis Tenodera sinensis<\/em> \uc655\uc0ac\ub9c8\uadc0<\/strong> \u00a9 Leslie Hurteau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Not quite winter yet, this Korean Skink (Scincella vandenburghi<\/em> \ub3c4\ub9c8\ubc40<\/strong>) was prowling about. \u00a9 Leslie Hurteau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The afternoon was spent in the elevated cow fields in Ye-ri, where a large group of pipits were found, roughly equal parts Red-throated<\/strong> and Buff-bellied<\/strong>. A Eurasian Skylark<\/strong> was briefly heard and then seen, as well as Black Kite<\/strong>, and a Large-billed Crow<\/strong> by the harbour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ferry trip on the way there and back unfortunately didn\u2019t yield much other than a few Larus spp. gulls. With no outside access and windows caked over with salt from waves, seawatching wasn\u2019t exactly easy. All in all, a pleasant weekend visit to Heuksan Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
