{"id":24714,"date":"2021-05-17T08:27:04","date_gmt":"2021-05-16T23:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=24714"},"modified":"2021-05-17T10:17:41","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T01:17:41","slug":"survey-in-gimpo-hangang-estuary-yudo-area-and-siam-wetland-on-may-11-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=24714","title":{"rendered":"Survey in Gimpo Hangang Estuary, Yudo area and Siam Wetland on May 11, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Bernhard Seliger and Dr. Choi Hyun-Ah (Hanns Seidel Foundation, Birds Korea Lifetime Members), Cho Youjin (HSF Korea)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May is one of the most lovely times to visit the rice field areas near the Han estuary, when water in the fields attracts different species of waders, but the density of plants is not yet so high that good views are impossible. Certainly, the diversity of species is much lower than in the tidal flats further out in the West Sea (Yellow Sea), but the views are sometimes good, sometimes spectacular in the rice fields, and sometimes quite near. This time, we also had an interview with a crew filming Hangang Estuary in spring, summer, autumn and winter for a documentary which will be shown on JCTB this winter. The documentary is made by some of the most experienced Korean film makers and it is good to see that this kind of awareness raising for the healthy use of wetlands takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notable species on this survey included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>16 <strong>Black-faced Spoonbills<\/strong>, among them 7 at Yudo Islet, in all probability breeding there.<\/li><li>More than 1000 <strong>Great Cormorants<\/strong>, among them around 800 in Yudo, where one of the largest breeding colonies of Great Cormorants in South Korea exists<\/li><li>A single <strong>Oriental Cuckoo<\/strong> heard<\/li><li>Two <strong>Mandarin<\/strong> drakes were seen, probably breeding in nearby hills and mountains<\/li><li><strong>Common Greenshanks<\/strong>, <strong>Wood Sandpiper<\/strong>, <strong>Terek Sandpiper<\/strong>, <strong>Eurasian Whimbrel<\/strong>, <strong>Common Sandpiper<\/strong> plus <strong>Great Egrets<\/strong>, <strong>Intermediate<\/strong> and <strong>Little Egrets<\/strong>, plus <strong>Eastern Cattle Egrets<\/strong> and <strong>Grey Herons<\/strong> as well as <strong>Black-crowned Night Herons<\/strong> were seen<\/li><li>The typical summer visitors, like <strong>Black-naped Oriole<\/strong>, <strong>Oriental Dollarbird<\/strong>, <strong>Korean Bush Warbler<\/strong>,
