{"id":23947,"date":"2020-12-22T12:15:51","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T03:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=23947"},"modified":"2020-12-22T12:15:53","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T03:15:53","slug":"hwaseong-wetlands-fns-december-16th-and-17th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=23947","title":{"rendered":"Hwaseong Wetlands FNS, December 16th and 17th"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bird News from Nial Moores with Jung Hanchul (Gyeonggi KFEM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eleventh and last survey this year of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eaaflyway.net\/hwaseong-city-eaafp-mou\/\">Hwaseong Wetlands Project<\/a>, an initiative developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eaaflyway.net\/home-2-2-2-4\/\">East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership<\/a> and Hwaseong City, with survey-work conducted by Birds Korea and KFEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In sub-zero conditions still much to be seen, with 51,000 waterbirds counted, including two newly-recorded waterbird species for the Wetlands Project: two <strong>Common Gull<\/strong> and a single stunning male <strong>Long-tailed Duck<\/strong>, perhaps here for his fourth winter. These are the 107<sup>th<\/sup> and 108<sup>th<\/sup> waterbird species recorded here since the Wetlands Project began in June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full this <strong>Long-tailed Duck <\/strong><em>Clangula hyemalis<\/em> \ubc14\ub2e4\uafe9 (fittingly known as &#8220;Ice Duck&#8221; in Japanese) was perhaps back here for his fourth winter in a row \u00a9 Nial Moores <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0On 16<sup>th<\/sup>, in addition to thousands of <strong>Tundra Beans<\/strong>, <strong>Greater White-fronteds<\/strong> and rafts of duck (including 158 <strong>Ruddy Shelduck<\/strong> and 160 <strong>Smew<\/strong>, \u00a0looking especially resplendent in the hard bright light) we found between five and seven <strong>Lesser White-fronted Geese<\/strong>, 16 <strong>White-tailed Eagle<\/strong> (sadly no sign of the Steller\u2019s from earlier in the month, though), 1-2 <strong>Upland Buzzard<\/strong>, 138 <strong>Saunders\u2019s Gull<\/strong>, up to eight <strong>Oriental Stork<\/strong>, and less spectacular but still noteworthy this far north in mid-December, two <strong>Dusky on a boardwalk in a wet reed-bed, enjoying flight views of a <strong>Eurasian Bittern<\/strong> and good long looks at parties of <strong>Common Reed Buntings<\/strong>, <strong>Pallas\u2019s Reed Buntings<\/strong> and <strong>Chinese Penduline Tits<\/strong>. In the same area we found another two <strong>Dusky Warbler<\/strong>.
