{"id":22807,"date":"2019-12-24T10:45:34","date_gmt":"2019-12-24T01:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=22807"},"modified":"2019-12-26T13:08:27","modified_gmt":"2019-12-26T04:08:27","slug":"conservation-photography-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=22807","title":{"rendered":"Conservation Photography Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nial Moores &amp; Bjorn Olesen, December 9<sup>th<\/sup>-18<sup>th<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal wildlife highlights of ten days spent with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bjornolesenwildlifephotography\/\">Bjorn Olesen<\/a> gathering images for his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bjornolesenwildlifephotography\/\"> <\/a>next wildlife conservation book included: &nbsp;five species of crane, with often spectacular views of hundreds of <strong>Red-crowneds<\/strong> and thousands of <strong>White-naped<\/strong> and <strong>Hoodeds<\/strong>; <strong>Scaly-sided Merganser<\/strong>; <strong>Oriental Storks<\/strong>; frame-filling views of <strong>Swan Goose<\/strong>; <strong>Baikal Teal<\/strong> at several sites, including 100,000 on the Geum River and thousands swirling over rice-fields at Suncheon Bay with hordes of geese and other duck lit by a massive full moon; a small flock of salmon-pink and highly vocal free-flying <strong>Crested Ibis<\/strong> at Upo; <strong>Solitary Snipe<\/strong>; over-wintering <strong>Richard\u2019s Pipits<\/strong>; good numbers of winter finches and at least 1,600 <strong>Lapland Longspur<\/strong> at Saemangeum; and two thrillingly close encounters with <strong>Amur Leopard Cats &#8211;<\/strong> at Saemangeum (below) and Upo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rs2000-alc-hunting-DSC06300-1024x732.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rs2000-alc-hunting-DSC06300-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rs2000-alc-hunting-DSC06300-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rs2000-alc-hunting-DSC06300-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rs2000-alc-hunting-DSC06300-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rs2000-alc-hunting-DSC06300-1536x1098.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/rs2000-alc-hunting-DSC06300-2048x1463.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With our focus on his photographing (and me at times trying to digiscope with a handheld sony compact through a &#8220;truly superb Swaro&#8221; scope, often over his shoulder!), we recorded some of the ROK\u2019s iconic species and their habitats by investing our time in the Cheorwon CCZ on 9<sup>th<\/sup> and 17<sup>th<\/sup>; &nbsp;Seosan Reclamation Areas B and A on 10<sup>th<\/sup> and 16<sup>th<\/sup>; the Geum River and Estuary on 11<sup>th<\/sup>; Saemangeum and Suncheon Bay on 12<sup>th<\/sup>; the South-east River on 13<sup>th<\/sup>; Junam Reservoir on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; Upo Ramsar site on 15<sup>th<\/sup>; and at the National Arboretum and in central Seoul on the 18<sup>th<\/sup>. This meant we had no time to look through gulls or to go through bunting flocks, or even to visit the east coast; but instead we had plenty of time to watch and enjoy some other of Korea\u2019s wonderful winter bird-life, including more widespread Eurasian species like  <strong>Eurasian Spoonbill<\/strong> and the now Near Threatened  <strong>Northern Lapwing<\/strong>; and other taxa which are confined to the Far East of the landmass in winter, like the <em>middendorffii<\/em> <strong>Taiga Bean Goose<\/strong> and globally Vulnerable (VU) <strong>Rustic Bunting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note: all images below are by and copyright of Nial Moores and Birds Korea. weather was mild (on some dates, even warm); there were few restrictions at key sites, with the exception of the CCZ, where access is even more difficult this year than usual because of the outbreak of African Swine Fever (again also restricting feeding programs for the nation\u2019s wintering Cinereous Vultures); and unhappily, construction has become even more rampant at many sites than in the past three years or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Species of greatest note included: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Swan Goose <\/strong><em>Anser cygnoides<\/em>. LC. A\nFirst-year was at Suncheon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Red-crowned Crane <\/strong><em>Grus japonensis<\/em>. EN. A coarsely estimated 350 were in the Cheorwon CCZ on 17<sup>th<\/sup>. If I noted the information correctly, according to Mr Baek Jong-Han, Chair of the Crane Association in Cheorwon, who kindly helped us around the area, 1500 were counted here during a recent census. This is out of a total global population estimated by BirdLife in 2019 at only 1,830 mature individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>White-crowned Crane <\/strong><em>Antigone vipio<\/em>. VU. 2,200 were counted in one scan in the Cheorwon CCZ on 9<sup>th<\/sup>. According to Mr Baek Jong-Han, Chair of the Crane Association in Cheorwon, ~5,600 were counted here during a recent census \u2013 far exceeding the total global population estimate of 3,700-4,500 (mature) individuals estimated by BirdLIfe in 2019. The wintering flock at Junam was not checked, but 18 were seen in flight over the reservoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Common Crane <\/strong><em>Grus grus<\/em>. LC. Two were at\nSuncheon, and two were in Cheorwon CCZ on 17<sup>th<\/sup> (according to Mr Baek\nJong-Han, Chair of the Crane Association in Cheorwon, 18 \u2013 presumably a\nnational high count &#8211; were counted here during a recent census).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hooded Crane <\/strong><em>Grus monacha<\/em>. VU. As\npredicted by observations on Baekryeong in October and November, a good winter\nfor them in the ROK.
