{"id":22637,"date":"2019-10-31T18:03:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T09:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=22637"},"modified":"2019-10-31T18:03:23","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T09:03:23","slug":"baekryeong-island-october-22nd-31st","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=22637","title":{"rendered":"Baekryeong Island, October 22nd-31st"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bird News from Nial Moores (with Mark Harris 22<sup>nd<\/sup>-25<sup>th<\/sup>\nand Ju Yong-Ki 31<sup>st<\/sup>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 151 species recorded to date, with a good spread of what are generally considered to be irruptive species in the ROK (including <strong>Chinese Nuthatch<\/strong>, <strong>Eurasian Treecreeper<\/strong>, <strong>Common Redpoll<\/strong> and <strong>Eurasian Bullfinch<\/strong>) though with still no <em>Oriental Storks<\/em> (a major focus of the current research), and no exceptional numbers or movements of more abundant species &#8211; despite some interesting weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Tundra Bean Goose<\/strong> <em>Anser serrirostris<\/em>. Increasing steadily, with 950 counted on the 29<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Stejneger\u2019s Scoter<\/strong> <em>Melanitta stejnegeri<\/em>.\u00a0 At least 161 were present on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<\/li><li>Merganser sp. Three female mergansers showing multiple features suggesting Scaly-sided Merganser flew west in strong winds and rain on the 25<sup>th<\/sup>. \u00a0However, views were insufficient to make a confident identification.<\/li><li><strong>Japanese Quail<\/strong> <em>Coturnix japonica<\/em>. NT. The only record was of two on 29<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Eurasian Spoonbill<\/strong> <em>Platalea leucorodia<\/em>. One on 30<sup>th<\/sup>. Although regular in spring, this is my first record in autumn on the island.<\/li><li><strong>Chinese Egret<\/strong> <em>Egretta eulophotes<\/em>. VU. VU. Two on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> (one of which was relentlessly harassed by two Large-billed Crows); one on 26<sup>th<\/sup>; and one on 31st. One on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Upland Buzzard<\/strong> <em>Buteo hemilasius<\/em>. First was one on 29<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li>Water Rail sp. One was seen in flight and heard briefly in Yeonhwari on 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, and one was heard in Jincheon on 29<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Little Owl<\/strong> <em>Athene noctua<\/em> <em>plumipes<\/em>. One or two have been heard calling most nights; with one seen in the late evening on 28<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Chinese Grey Shrike<\/strong> <em>Lanius sphenocercus<\/em>. Although &nbsp;1-2 are regular on the island in October, this year there have been up to five present, with at least 2-3 still present in territory on 29<sup>th<\/sup>-30<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Japanese Waxwing<\/strong> <em>Bombycilla japonica<\/em>. NT. The highest day count has been 230 on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> (with flocks in multiple areas, including c. 175 in Junghwadong), with probably 300-500 present on the island in total.<\/li><li><strong>Japanese Bush Warbler<\/strong> <em>Horornis diphone<\/em>. One was heard on 22<sup>nd<\/sup>. My first on this island.<\/li><li><strong>Long-tailed Tit<\/strong> <em>Aegithalos caudatus<\/em>. Although this individual had a strong wash on the flanks, the lores were very poorly marked (age-related?).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Swinhoe\u2019s White-eye<\/strong> <em>Zosterops simplex<\/em>. One seen on 22<sup>nd<\/sup>, in the same area as the previous week. A group of c12 white-eyes seen poorly and heard in Dumujin on 27<sup>th<\/sup> were thought most likely to be this species.<\/li><li><strong>Chinese Nuthatch<\/strong> <em>Sitta villosa<\/em>. Three singles were logged on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Eurasian Treecreeper<\/strong> <em>Certhia familiaris<\/em>. One was heard on 24<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Red-throated Thrush<\/strong> <em>Turdus ruficollis<\/em>. An adult male type was seen briefly in good light on 27<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Naumann\u2019s Thrush<\/strong> <em>Turdus naumanni<\/em>. Three redpoll were heard and seen in flight on 27th. One showed an obviously paler rump band suggesting Arctic.<\/li><li><strong>Red Crossbill<\/strong> <em>Loxia curvirostra<\/em>. Small numbers present on several dates, with the highest count 75 on the 27<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Pine Bunting<\/strong> <em>Emberiza leucocephalos<\/em>. Only two recorded during this period: singles on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> and 27<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li><li><strong>Yellow-breasted Bunting<\/strong> <em>Emberiza aureola<\/em>. CR.
