{"id":2240,"date":"2011-12-15T18:59:30","date_gmt":"2011-12-15T09:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=2240"},"modified":"2013-04-16T20:44:12","modified_gmt":"2013-04-16T11:44:12","slug":"three-day-tour-of-rok-dec-11-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=2240","title":{"rendered":"Three day tour of ROK, Dec 11-13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><u>Bird News from Nigel Marven and Nial Moores<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 11<sup>th<\/sup>, Cheorwon-Arboretum-Geum River<\/strong><br \/>\nA cool, dry dawn (c. -7C) was followed by long sunny periods, and much greyer conditions on the west coast. The morning flight of cranes in Cheorwon included excellent views of both <strong>Red-crowned<\/strong> (80+) and <strong>White-napeds<\/strong> (50+) and one <strong>Hooded Crane<\/strong>, while additional birds of interest there included a male <strong>Pine Bunting<\/strong>, a <strong>Long-eared Owl<\/strong> (flushed by several <strong>Cinereous Vulture<\/strong> landing clumsily into a clump of pine trees) and two or more <strong>Pallas\u2019s Rosefinch<\/strong> (heard only by NM). Remarkably, there were no <strong>Siberian Accentor<\/strong> at this or other of the stops. <br \/>\nClose to the arboretum, a lone <strong>Solitary Snipe<\/strong> was seen excellently, while a long drive down to the Geum ended successfully with a flock of c. 35,000 <strong>Baikal Teal<\/strong> seen lifting off the river into the evening gloom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 12<sup>th<\/sup>, Geum River-Gomso Bay-Southeast River<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nA milder day, with perfect conditions for watching a flock of c. 30,000 <strong>Baikal Teal<\/strong> at the Geum River, where there was also a very late <strong>Red-throated Pipit<\/strong> and small numbers of <strong>Lapland Longspur<\/strong>, <strong>Eurasian Skylark<\/strong> and <strong>Far Eastern Lark<\/strong> overhead. Prolonged views of two <strong>Oriental Stork<\/strong> at Gomso Bay (three were present on 12<sup>th<\/sup>: Ju Yung-Ki) were then followed by excellent long looks at two pairs of <strong>Scaly-sided Merganser<\/strong> on the southeast river.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>December 13<sup>th<\/sup>, Joonam &amp; Nakdong Estuary<\/strong><br \/>\nA cold and clear dawn (-4C) provided excellent conditions for \u2018scoping decent numbers of Taiga <strong>Bean Geese<\/strong> (c. 2000) and small numbers of <strong>Baikal Teal<\/strong> (c. 100), with further species of note including probably 350+ <strong>Rufous Turtle Dove<\/strong> but only one <strong>Dusky Thrush<\/strong>.
