The latest in a series of surveys carried out for Gimpo City brought again a nice mix of species. In particular, the following observations were of interest: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black-Faced\nSpoonbills:<\/strong> Seven, including\ntwo sitting on nests breeding on Yudo Islet, together with a mix of Great\nEgrets, Intermediate Egrets and Grey Herons, and immediately adjacent to a\nlarge colony of Great Cormorants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The colony of cormorants was still very\nactive, with around 890 Great cormorants<\/strong>\ncounted on the Island and large groups roaming around for food, with\nadditionally  135 birds counted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese Pond Herons:<\/strong> Four solitary birds in total in the Siam Wetland site (Eastern part of the survey area) and the Yudo site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mandarin\nDuck:<\/strong> Two drakes on the\nSiam Wetland site and a couple on the Yudo (Western) site. Probably birds are\nnesting in the adjacent small mountains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shorebirds, which had been regular in\nMarch and April, have mostly left the area, besides a group of ten Dunlin <\/strong>and two Common Greenshanks<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the large and mostly undisturbed rice field areas we counted 203 Great Egrets<\/strong>, 77 Intermediate Egrets<\/strong>, 43 Little Egrets<\/strong>, 129 Eastern<\/strong> Cattle egrets<\/strong>, 65 Grey Herons<\/strong> and one Black-crowned<\/strong> Night heron<\/strong>, with two more breeding on Yudo Islet. Other birds included Common<\/strong> and Black-capped Kingfisher<\/strong> (thanks for Dr. Nial Moores for identifying the latter from recorded calls), Black-naped oriole<\/strong>, Oriental Dollarbird<\/strong>, Korean Bush warblers<\/strong>, Blue-and-white Flycatcher<\/strong>, and Oriental Reed Warblers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the extensive area of rice fields and adjacent villages and houses, there were very few swallows, with only one Barn swallow<\/strong> and a group of ten Red-rumped swallows<\/strong> counted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
