{"id":20526,"date":"2018-02-26T12:43:28","date_gmt":"2018-02-26T03:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=20526"},"modified":"2018-02-26T12:45:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-26T03:45:35","slug":"baekryeong-island-february-20-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=20526","title":{"rendered":"Baekryeong Island, February 20-23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bird News from Nial Moores with Bernhard Seliger, Ha Jung-Moon and Choi Hyun-Ah<\/p>\n<p>As part of Birds Korea-HSF research on the birdlife of the inner border region of Korea, we spent two full and two half-days\u00a0 on Baekryeong in weather that was sometimes cold and clear (with morning lows down to -7C), or mild (+7C) and windy (on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>) or very foggy, with visibility falling to &lt;100m at times (on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup>).\u00a0 Although no species were seen undertaking active migration, the species mix and the day-to-day changes in numbers suggest that spring migration has now started.<\/p>\n<p>Covering most of the best sites on the island at least once, we recorded a total of 79 species, including the following estimates:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taiga Bean Goose<\/strong> <em>Anser fabalis.<\/em>\u00a0 c. 300<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tundra Bean Goose<\/strong> <em>Anser serrirostris.<\/em>\u00a0 c. 950<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20525 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/rs-tundrabeangooseDSC08787-1024x704.jpg\" alt=\"rs-tundrabeangooseDSC08787\" width=\"690\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/rs-tundrabeangooseDSC08787-1024x704.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/rs-tundrabeangooseDSC08787-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/rs-tundrabeangooseDSC08787-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/rs-tundrabeangooseDSC08787-768x528.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/rs-tundrabeangooseDSC08787.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><strong>Tundra Bean Goose<\/strong> \u00a9 Nial Moores.\u00a0 Identification of Bean Geese to species is often complicated by wide variation &#8211; both in field conditions and in Taiga Bean &#8211; with the biggest, most obvious <em>middendorffii<\/em> in the SE, and less obvious birds locally along parts of the west coast. Subtle features used in combination to ID these as <strong>Tundra<\/strong> rather than <em>middendorffii<\/em> Taiga Bean include their fairly modest size; their stocky-looking necks (longer, thinner-looking in Taiga, especially when alert); their &#8220;swollen&#8221; lower mandible, thicker basally, thinner distally (usually more straight-looking or shallowly convex in <em>middendorffii<\/em>, and importantly of almost equal depth both basally and distally); the obvious forehead (most <em>middendorffii<\/em> Taiga have a more swan-like slope from the forehead continuing along the bill); the darkness of the head extending on many down the neck (most <em>middendorffii<\/em> look contrastingly dark-headed); the variability of orange on the bill (almost all <em>middendorffii<\/em> show a narrow band of orange of more or less equal extent); the lack of rusty plumage tones; and the fairly subdued flank barring which often looks more contrasting in <em>middendorffii<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stejneger\u2019s Scoter<\/strong> <em>Melanitta<\/em> (<em>deglandi<\/em>) <em>stejnegeri. <\/em>35<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>American Scoter<\/strong> <em>Melanitta americana. <\/em>Globally Near Threatened<em>. <\/em>Ten<\/p>\n<p><strong>Horned Grebe<\/strong> <em>Podiceps auritus.<\/em> Globally Vulnerable. 3-6. One (or less likely two) on the 20th. Globally Near Threatened. 38-45 were present, including a flock of 34 on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>. Although most birds showed a decent white blaze around the bill, several (presumably Second Calendar-years) lacked any white.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carrion Crow<\/strong> <em>Corvus corone<\/em>. \u00a0One on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>. Perhaps the first record of this species on the island?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bohemian Waxwing<\/strong> <em>Bombycilla garrulus<\/em>. One heard on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese Waxwing<\/strong> <em>Bombycilla japonica<\/em>. Globally Near Threatened. Easy to overlook, were\u00a0 some of these the same as those watched trying to head out to sea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=19902\">last October<\/a>, that instead decided to remain for the winter?\u00a0 Or did they arrive later for the winter (most inland records in the ROK tend to be in Dec-Jan)? One was heard on the 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, many images were taken of habitats; much discussion was had on possible ways forward; and two brief meetings were held with the County Mayor.
