Bird News from Nial Moores with Jack Hanna, George Bryant and Bob Stamp<\/p>\n

Over 150 species were logged between us during a highly-enjoyable and great-humored week, with a long list of highlights in occasionally sub-zero conditions that included 60 Swan Goose<\/strong> in Paju, single Snow Goose<\/strong> and Mute Swan<\/strong> at Seosan, 420+ Baikal Teal<\/strong> in Jeollanam, small numbers of Stejneger\u2019s<\/strong> (White-winged) Scoter <\/strong>off Geojin, eight Scaly-sided Merganser<\/strong> on the North River, four Oriental Stork<\/strong> at Seosan, single adult Steller\u2019s Sea Eagle<\/strong> on the East Han (which flew directly towards and then right over us, pursued by a Carrion Crow<\/strong>…close-up pictures of this magical moment from Bob received and posted on December 14th),\u00a0 c. 120 White-naped<\/strong> and 100 Red-crowned Cranes<\/strong> in increasingly heavy snow at Cheorwon and two Hooded Cranes<\/strong> at Seosan, a single confiding Solitary Snipe<\/strong> at the national arboretum, three Spectacled Guillemot<\/strong> off Geojin, and c. 130 Asian Rosyfinch<\/strong> and three Pallas\u2019s Rosefinch<\/strong> at Taebaek.<\/p>\n

In addition we enjoyed a wonderfully diverse mix of seasonally scarce, local or regionally-endemic species \u00a0including Mandarin<\/strong>, Falcated <\/strong>and Harlequin Ducks<\/strong>, American Scoter<\/strong>, Eurasian Bittern<\/strong>, Eurasian<\/strong> and Black-Faced Spoonbills<\/strong>, Temminck\u2019s Cormorant<\/strong>, single Golden Eagle<\/strong>, Long-billed Plover <\/strong>at several sites, Saunders\u2019s Gull <\/strong>(including 195 in the outer Geum),<\/strong> Taimyr Gull<\/strong>, Whiskered Tern <\/strong>(one at Seosan), Eurasian Eagle-Owl <\/strong>(two together on cliffs), two Grey-capped<\/strong> and multiple Japanese Pygmy Woodpeckers<\/strong>, Yellow-bellied Tit <\/strong>(five at the Geum), Light-vented Bulbul <\/strong>(eight at the Geum), single Japanese <\/strong>and Korean Bush Warblers <\/strong>together at the Geum and another single Japanese Bush Warbler <\/strong>at Yangyang, Grey-backed<\/strong>, Pale<\/strong>, Dusky<\/strong> and Naumann\u2019s Thrushes<\/strong>, multiple Siberian Accentor <\/strong>at several sites (apparently this is a good winter here for them), Japanese Wagtail <\/strong>at multiple sites, single Red-throated Pipit<\/strong> at the Geum, and – at several sites – Chinese Grosbeak <\/strong>(including 60 in Paju), Eurasian Bullfinch, Red Crossbill, Long-tailed Rosefinch <\/strong>and Rustic<\/strong> and Pallas\u2019s Reed Buntings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
