Bird News from Nial Moores<\/p>\n

In clear conditions with westerly then southwesterly winds, plenty of species on the move.<\/p>\n

From the ferry on the 28th<\/sup>, two Northern Boobook<\/strong> , nine Ancient Murrelet<\/strong> and 4-5 Red-throated Loon<\/strong> were the highlights, with species of note in the afternoon on the island itself including four American Scoter<\/strong> still, two Daurian Starling<\/strong>, a Black Drongo<\/strong> and good numbers of regular migrants \u2013 including a half-dozen Richard\u2019s Pipit<\/strong>, a dozen or more Stejneger\u2019s Stonechat<\/strong>, 50+ Yellow-browed Warbler<\/strong>, and 5-6 Ochre-rumped<\/strong>, 30+ Chestnut-eared<\/strong>, 35-50 Yellow-browed, <\/strong>100+ Black-faced<\/strong> and 150 Little Buntings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the 29th<\/sup>, a (tragically oiled) Red-throated Loon<\/strong> was \u201cyodeling\u201d on a reservoir; and although there seemed to be fewer buntings around, there were three more species of starling (a dozen White-cheeked<\/strong>, 2+ Red-billed<\/strong> and rarest in the Korean context, a single White-shouldered Starling<\/strong>) and a good mix of wagtails, including two adult male taivana<\/em> Eastern Yellow<\/strong> and a Citrine<\/strong>. There was also a decent spread of shorebirds which included single Black-winged Stilt<\/strong> and Pin-tailed Snipe<\/strong>, 3-4 Far Eastern Oystercatcher<\/strong>, 3+ Wood Sandpiper<\/strong> and three Long-toed Stint<\/strong> – with the day’s highlight a Grey-headed Lapwing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
