Bird News from Barry Reed, Toby Austin & Mike (Mick) Ilett with Nial Moores<\/p>\n

Major highlights included a flock of 140 Pine Bunting<\/strong>, an adult Eastern Imperial Eagle <\/strong>and a Greater Spotted Eagle<\/strong>, six Scaly-sided Merganser<\/strong>, at least four Steller\u2019s Sea Eagle<\/strong>, single Yellow-billed Loon<\/strong> and Swan Goose<\/strong>, 130 Asian Rosy Finch<\/strong>, and views of single Grey <\/strong>and Snow Buntings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In bright and cold conditions on February 2nd<\/sup> at the National Arboretum we found three Solitary Snipe<\/strong> and three Mandarin Duck<\/strong> on the main stream, and also logged 1-2 White-backed Woodpecker<\/strong>, 2-4 Yellow-bellied Tit<\/strong>, several Naumann\u2019s<\/strong> and a single Dusky Thrush<\/strong> (and at least one hybrid between them), but only heard single Pallas\u2019s Rosefinch<\/strong> and Eurasian Bullfinch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the afternoon at Cheorwon, best in the Korean context was a flock of 140+ Pine Bunting<\/strong> (a new national high count?) and an adult Eastern Imperial Eagle<\/strong>; while more expected were small numbers of White-naped<\/strong> and Red-crowned Cranes<\/strong>, c. 50 Cinereous Vulture<\/strong>, 2-3 White-tailed Eagle<\/strong>, a single Long-tailed Rosefinch<\/strong> and a heard only Siberian Accentor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the 3rd<\/sup>, an excellent morning started with an adult and a Second Calendar-year Steller\u2019s Sea Eagle<\/strong> on the Han River, followed soon after by a First-winter Glaucous<\/strong> and 30+ Mongolian Gulls<\/strong>, single Swan Goose<\/strong> and six Scaly-sided Merganser<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A long drive to the mountain near Taebaek added Asian Rosy Finch<\/strong> (130) and a single Snow Bunting<\/strong> still, with Pallas\u2019s Rosefinch<\/strong> again heard but not seen.<\/p>\n

On the 4th at Guryongpo, there were good numbers of Rhinoceros Auklet<\/strong> (several hundred) and several small flocks of Ancient Murrelet<\/strong> (perhaps 100 in total), along with a single Yellow-billed Loon<\/strong> and a good assortment of gulls. We also enjoyed good views of Temminck\u2019s Cormorant<\/strong> and Harlequin Duck<\/strong> (at least 20-30 of each) and small numbers of Horned <\/strong>and Black-necked Grebes<\/strong>. In the afternoon, a visit to Gyeongju National Park was largely uneventful, with best 1+ Yellow-bellied Tit<\/strong> and two Siberian Accentor <\/strong>heard.<\/p>\n

On the 5th<\/sup>, highlights at the Nakdong Estuary included four or five Relict Gull<\/strong> (two First-winters and 2-3 Second-winters), c. 10 Saunders\u2019s Gull<\/strong>, \u00a0two or three adult Steller\u2019s Sea Eagle<\/strong> (including one chasing off an adult White-tailed<\/strong>), a single Greater Spotted Eagle<\/strong>, 19 Far Eastern Oystercatcher<\/strong> (a personal high count here) and (yet another overwintering) Red-throated Pipit<\/strong>.\u00a0 In woodland there we also saw a female Grey Bunting<\/strong> (and heard a second), a male Red-flanked Bluetail<\/strong> and several Pale Thrush<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
