Marine Bird Survey, January 18-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bird News from Nial Moores with Dr Bernhard Seliger and Dr Choi Hyun-Ah of the Hanns Seidel Foundation<\/p>\n<p>Birding highlights of this Birds Korea-Hanns Seidel Foundation marine bird survey of the Korean inner border\/\u00a0 Daejin-Geojin coast included seven (!) species of alcid, one of which was either a fairly standard-looking <strong>Little Auk<\/strong> or an odd-looking <strong>Least Auklet<\/strong>; huge numbers of loons, including two <strong>Yellow-billeds<\/strong>; an all-dark shearwater (tentatively identified as a <strong>Short-tailed<\/strong>); and huge numbers of gulls, including two <strong>Glaucous-winged<\/strong> and at least one <strong>Caspian<\/strong>-type.<\/p>\n<p>Most abundant species among the &gt;36,000 birds counted were <strong>Common Gull<\/strong> (13,200), <strong>Arctic Loon<\/strong> (5,500), <strong>Slaty-backed Gull<\/strong> (4,350), <strong>Pelagic Cormorant<\/strong> (3,900), <strong>Rhinoceros Auklet<\/strong> (2,500), <strong>Ancient Murrelet<\/strong> (2,400) and <strong>Pacific Loon<\/strong> (1,000). \u00a0\u00a0Additional records of note included a decent count of 240 <strong>American Scoter<\/strong>, three <strong>Brunnich&#8217;s<\/strong> and two <strong>Common Murres<\/strong>, eight <strong>Spectacled Guillemot<\/strong>, five <strong>Long-billed Murrelet<\/strong>, single <strong>Cinereous Vulture<\/strong>, two <strong>White-tailed Eagle<\/strong>, a half-dozen <strong>Naumann\u2019s Thrush<\/strong> (one of which looked to have substantial <strong>Dusky Thrush<\/strong> influence) and at least three <strong>Siberian Accentor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" cachinnans<\/i>-type on right with <strong>Vega<\/strong> and <strong>Slaty-backed Gulls<\/strong> \u00a9 Nial Moores. On land, the bird had long, very thin looking yellowish-grey legs.
