Bird News from Nial Moores<\/p>\n

On the 10th<\/sup>, a poor ferry crossing for birds, with only three Streaked Shearwater<\/strong> and a single Pomarine Skua<\/strong> as highlights, while on the land best were single Amur Falcon<\/strong> and Common Starling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the 11th<\/sup>, a tardy White-throated Needletail<\/strong> (also seen on the 12th<\/sup>), three Amur Falcon<\/strong>, two Hume\u2019s Leaf Warbler<\/strong>, single Pallas\u2019s Rosefinch<\/strong> and Dusky Thrush<\/strong> and 6-8 Yellow-bellied Tit<\/strong> were highlights.<\/p>\n

On the 12th<\/sup>, in moderate north-easterlies, best were a single Bluethroat <\/strong>and Pine Bunting<\/strong>, with only small numbers of more expected species (e.g. only two Pallas\u2019s Leaf<\/strong> and four Dusky Warblers<\/strong> and single Siberian Rubythroat<\/strong> and Stejneger\u2019s Stonechat<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

On the 13th<\/sup>, with light westerlies and occasional heavy overcast, two Japanese Quail<\/strong>, single Yellow-breasted Bunting,<\/strong> two exceptionally early Grey Bunting <\/strong>(heard only) and a Little Owl<\/strong> were the most notable species.<\/p>\n

On the 14th<\/sup>, in warm weather (reaching 18C) and with light southwesterlies, a decent passage of raptors was noted in the southwest of the island with e.g. 35 Northern Goshawk<\/strong>, 31 Eastern Buzzard<\/strong>, four Black Kite<\/strong>, and three each of Crested Honey Buzzard<\/strong>, Amur Falcon<\/strong> and Eurasian Sparrowhawk<\/strong> counted moving seaward in only 75 minutes. Other highlights during the day included a single group of 17 Amur Falcon<\/strong> and one or two Black Stork<\/strong> (the first seen from the moving bus in Taekaul Ri at 9:45; the second, same or different, seen in Junghwadong 6.5km to the southwest at 11:15).<\/p>\n
