Bird News from Matt Poll<\/strong><\/p>\n

The reeds at Suncheon Bay at this time of year are constantly rustling with restless Vinous-throated Parrotbills<\/strong>, Chinese Penduline Tits<\/strong>, and Pallas\u2019s Reed Buntings<\/strong> (though almost no Common Reed Buntings<\/strong>\u00a0yet).\u00a0 There are now noticeably less reeds for these birds, as truckloads of workers have been harvesting large swaths of reeds from the area lately, leaving the inevitable piles of trash behind them.\u00a0 Another issue is that one has to be careful where one steps these days, as a disturbing and widespread new trend at the bay seems to be \u2018outdoor bathroom breaks\u2019 \u2013 a truly repulsive situation.<\/p>\n

The bay was gloomy and chilly on December 24th<\/sup>, with the obvious highlight being a brief encounter with a female Bluethroat<\/strong>.\u00a0 Other noteworthy bird sightings included a Western Osprey<\/strong>, just one Cinereous Vulture<\/strong>, and a dozen Lapland Longspurs<\/strong>.\u00a0 Two days later in the hills north of town, seven Pallas\u2019s Rosefinch<\/strong> were a treat to watch as they fed in a roadside ditch.<\/p>\n

On the final day of 2015, an Eastern Water Rail<\/strong> and the overwintering pair of Hen Harriers<\/strong> were seen, but the real excitement for the day came in the form of three Pine Buntings<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is a long-awaited species for me, and this sighting was apparently the most southerly mainland record.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Siberian Accentor<\/strong>\u00a0on January 2nd<\/sup> was a personal new species for the site, as were two Long-tailed Rosefinch<\/strong> on January 9th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Later in the day, I was fairly surprised to see a lethargic Long-billed Dowitcher<\/strong>. \u00a0Six White-naped Cranes<\/strong> were also a welcome sight.<\/p>\n
