{"id":15216,"date":"2015-04-22T17:42:32","date_gmt":"2015-04-22T08:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=15216"},"modified":"2015-04-22T17:42:32","modified_gmt":"2015-04-22T08:42:32","slug":"igidae-busan-april-14-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=15216","title":{"rendered":"Igidae, Busan, April 14-21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bird News from Nial Moores<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four days were spent (April 14<sup>th<\/sup>, 16<sup>th<\/sup>, 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 21<sup>st<\/sup>) with the aim of assessing turnover of migrants through this mainland site. Of greatest note was a small arrival of <strong>Sakhalin Leaf Warbler<\/strong> on 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 21<sup>st<\/sup> (with a national high day count of 5+ on both dates).<\/p>\n<p>On 14<sup>th<\/sup>, weather was fair with southwesterly winds after 5-6 days of persistent north-easterlies; on 16<sup>th<\/sup>, light winds, and starting thinly overcast with rain showers by evening; on 20<sup>th, <\/sup>rain all day (following rain all day on 19<sup>th<\/sup>, with light, occasionally moderate, easterly winds veering southwest and southerly for a time then backing northeast again); and on 21<sup>st<\/sup>, largely clear with light south-westerlies. The rain on 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> was from a slow-moving low pressure system that passed more or less through the Korean Strait, displacing several Japan-bound migrants.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to large numbers of <strong>Vinous-throated Parrotbill<\/strong> (probably 300+ throughout this period still), single <strong>Pacific Reef Egret<\/strong> on a couple of dates and 2-4 <strong>Black Kites <\/strong>daily, species of note included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Streaked Shearwater<\/strong> <em>Calonectris leucomelas<\/em>. Two on 20<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Western Osprey<\/strong> <em>Pandion haliaetus<\/em>. One on 16<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grey-faced Buzzard<\/strong> <em>Butastur indicus<\/em>. One on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oriental Cuckoo<\/strong> <em>Cuculus optatus<\/em>. One on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oriental Scops Owl<\/strong> <em>Otus sunia<\/em>. One on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; three on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; and one on 20<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Common Kingfisher<\/strong> <em>Alcedo atthis<\/em>. One on 16<sup>th<\/sup> is the personal first record of this species at Igidae.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ashy Minivet<\/strong> <em>Pericrocotus divaricatus<\/em>. After one on 7<sup>th<\/sup>, four on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; nine on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and nine on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Japanese Waxwing<\/strong> <em>Bombycilla japonica<\/em>. After five on 10<sup>th<\/sup>, 20+ on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; 17 on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; 65 on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and 20 on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Korean Bush Warbler<\/strong> <em>Horornis borealis<\/em>. After the first heard on 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, none on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; four on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; one on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and one on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asian Stubtail <\/strong><em>Urosphena squameiceps<\/em>. Four on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; 21 on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; eight on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and 17 on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pallas\u2019s Leaf Warbler<\/strong> <em>Phylloscopus proregulus<\/em>. One (probable) was heard on 16<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yellow-browed Warbler<\/strong> <em>Phylloscopus inornatus<\/em>. Usually fairly scarce in Busan. None on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; four on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; four on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and seven on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pale-legged Leaf Warbler<\/strong> <em>Phylloscopus tenellipes<\/em>. The following are counts of birds heard singing: None on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; 5+ on 16th; two on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and four on 21<sup>st<\/sup>. A further five or so birds were heard calling on 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 21<sup>st<\/sup>, some of which were suspected to be this species.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sakhalin Leaf Warbler<\/strong> <em>Phylloscopus borealoides<\/em>. The following are counts of birds heard singing: One on 16<sup>th<\/sup>, five on 20<sup>th<\/sup>, and five on 21<sup>st<\/sup>. Three of the birds on 21<sup>st<\/sup> were in an area not covered on the 20<sup>th<\/sup>. This appears to be a national high day-count. Two or more birds heard calling (but not singing) were also suspected to be this species on both 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 21st. Busan seems to be fairly reliable for this species during this period, being recorded here too on April 17<sup>th<\/sup> and \/ or 18<sup>th<\/sup> 2013 and 2014.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eastern Crowned Warbler<\/strong> <em>Phylloscopus coronatus<\/em>. The personal first of the year was one here on April 7<sup>th<\/sup>. Five on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; 19 on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; six on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and 13 on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>White\u2019s Thrush<\/strong> <em>Zoothera aurea<\/em>. Three on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; one on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and one on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grey-backed Thrush <\/strong><em>Turdus hortulorum<\/em>. One possible on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; 27 on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; five on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and four on 21<sup>st<\/sup>. This species is usually fairly scarce in Busan (and rare in Japan). The surprisingly high peak on the 16<sup>th<\/sup> presumably was comprised largely of Korean-breeders, as this species peaked in number on Eocheong on April 26<sup>th<\/sup> (2011) and Socheong on April 29<sup>th <\/sup>(2010), with these later peaks perhaps associated with birds breeding towards the north of its range.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grey Thrush<\/strong> <em>Turdus cardis<\/em>. Six on 14<sup>th<\/sup>, two on 16th; one on 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 2+ on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pale Thrush<\/strong> <em>Turdus pallidus<\/em>. Twenty on 14<sup>th<\/sup>, rising to 151 on 16<sup>th<\/sup> and falling back to 78 on the 20<sup>th<\/sup> and 81 on the 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brown-headed Thrush<\/strong> <em>Turdus chrysolaus<\/em>. One female on 16<sup>th<\/sup> was the only one seen well enough to confirm; several others heard on 16<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup> were likely of this species.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dusky Thrush<\/strong> <em>Turdus eunomus<\/em>. Four on the 16<sup>th<\/sup> and one on 20<sup>th<\/sup> (this species is seldom recorded at this site).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asian Brown Flycatcher<\/strong> <em>Muscicapa latirostris<\/em>. Four on 16<sup>th<\/sup> were the only ones found.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blue-and-white Flycatcher<\/strong> <em>Cyanoptila cyanomelana<\/em>. None on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; four on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; 15 on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and 19 on 21<sup>st<\/sup>. All of the males were of the nominate subspecies (which breeds in Japan), apart from two <em>intermedia<\/em> (which breeds on the Asian mainland including Korea) on 21<sup>st<\/sup>. One or two females were very warm-toned; others colder-grey; and at least two birds (see below) that initially looked female-like showed asymmetric male-blue patches and are therefore presumed to be Second Calendar-year males.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Siberian Blue Robin<\/strong> <em>Larvivora cyane<\/em>. One or two on 16<sup>th<\/sup> (including a well-seen adult male); and two in song on 20<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Japanese Robin<\/strong> <em>Larvivora akahige<\/em>. One was heard in song on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; a female was seen well on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; and one probable was glimpsed briefly in the rain on 20<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Siberian Rubythroat<\/strong> <em>Calliope calliope<\/em>. One male on 14<sup>th<\/sup> was the only record.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Red-flanked Bluetail<\/strong> <em>Tarsiger cyanurus<\/em>. One on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; 38 on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; five on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and four on 21<sup>st<\/sup>. In 2010, the peak count of this species on Socheong Island in far northwestern ROK was on April 17<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Narcissus Flycatcher<\/strong> <em>Ficedula narcissina<\/em>. Two males on the 14<sup>th<\/sup> were the personal first of the year; rising to six on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; eleven on 20<sup>th<\/sup> (including two females); and falling back to eight on 21<sup>st<\/sup> (all males), with several in song.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stejneger\u2019s Stonechat<\/strong> <em>Saxicola stejnegeri<\/em>. None on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; six on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; three on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and one on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Red-throated Pipit<\/strong> <em>Anthus cervinus<\/em>. This species appears to be rather scarce in Busan. One on 14<sup>th<\/sup> was a first personal record of this species in Igidae, with a second on 20<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Red Crossbill<\/strong> <em>Loxia curvirostra<\/em>. One on 16<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eurasian Siskin<\/strong> <em>Spinus spinus<\/em>. Although there were at least 280 here on April 7<sup>th<\/sup>, numbers were much lower during the week under review with <em>c<\/em>.10 on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; 55 on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; 30 on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and 11 on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tristram\u2019s Bunting<\/strong> <em>Emberiza tristrami<\/em>. None on 14<sup>th<\/sup>; 12 on 16<sup>th<\/sup>; ten on 20<sup>th<\/sup>; and probably six on 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All images below were digiscoped using a superb Swaorvski
