{"id":14853,"date":"2015-04-04T14:09:30","date_gmt":"2015-04-04T05:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=14853"},"modified":"2015-04-05T17:55:30","modified_gmt":"2015-04-05T08:55:30","slug":"cheonsu-bay-3-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=14853","title":{"rendered":"Cheonsu Bay, April 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bird News from Spike Millington and Eugene Cheah<\/p>\n<p>Nine staff from the EAAFP Secretariat Office took a day off school, meeting up with Cho Heungsang from Seosan Birdland,\u00a0to visit Cheonsu Bay on 3 April, hoping to see Hooded Cranes before they left on their northward migration. We were lucky to see about 180 <strong>Hooded Cranes<\/strong>, many giving excellent close views in the agricultural fields. Most of the geese had already left though: we only saw 200 <strong>Greater White-fronted Geese<\/strong>. Plenty of ducks still, mainly dabbling ducks and dominated by <strong>Mallard<\/strong>, with at least 500 birds. A group of 20 <strong>Common Mergansers<\/strong> were &#8220;offshore&#8221; and at least 100 <strong>Great Crested Grebes<\/strong> were scattered across the bay. Four <strong>Garganey<\/strong> rested in the lee of a reed island. Some sandy pools hosted 8 spoonbills, among the many <strong>Grey Herons<\/strong> (100) and smaller numbers of <strong>Great<\/strong> and <strong>Little Egrets<\/strong>. At first the spoonbills all looked to be <strong>Eurasian Spoonbills<\/strong>, but a sleeping bird later revealed itself to be a <strong>Black-faced Spoonbill<\/strong>. Among the 20 or so <strong>Little Ringed Plovers<\/strong> were a <strong>Common Redshank<\/strong>, a <strong>Spotted Redshank<\/strong> and a solitary <strong>Dunlin<\/strong>. In the Bay, the resting waders included 200 <strong>Dunlin<\/strong>, 100 <strong>Eastern Curlews<\/strong>, a few <strong>Eurasian Curlews<\/strong>, 30 <strong>Bar-tailed Godwits<\/strong>, 20 <strong>Grey Plovers<\/strong> and 5 <strong>Great Knots<\/strong>. Several <strong>Eastern Oystercatchers<\/strong> and one <strong>Common Snipe<\/strong> completed the shorebird count. <strong>Black-headed Gulls<\/strong> were very conspicuous, with hundreds present, many in breeding plumage.
