Bird News from Nial Moores<\/p>\n

Three hours were spent in the local park on the 11th<\/sup> (covering c.<\/i> 5km of trails) followed by ten hours there on the 17th<\/sup>, covering c<\/i>. 9km of up-and-down trails. Weather on both dates was sunny, with a light westerly wind (F1-3), rather cooler on the 17th<\/sup> with temperatures at 0730 of c.<\/i>7\u00b0C rising to a high of 14\u00b0C during the day. A total of 52 species were logged on the combined dates, including a few interesting records.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Common Pheasant<\/b> Phasianus colchicus<\/i>. Probably five.<\/li>\n
  2. Temminck’s Cormorant<\/b> Phalacrocorax capillatus<\/i>. At least 20 on the 11th<\/sup> and 5 on the 12th, including several birds gaining height on the 11th. Two or three flocks containing 1800+Cormorants flying SW from Oryeok on the 11th<\/sup> were either Temmick’s <\/i>or Great<\/i> (or a mix of the two species).<\/li>\n
  3. Japanese Sparrowhawk<\/b> Accipiter gularis<\/i>. One on the 11th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  4. Eurasian Sparrowhawk<\/b> Accipiter nisus<\/i>. Five on the 11th<\/sup> and one on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  5. Black Kite<\/b> Milvus migrans<\/i>. One on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  6. Eastern Buzzard<\/b> Buteo japonicus<\/i>. One on the 11th<\/sup> and one on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  7. Black-headed Gull<\/b> Chroicocephalus ridibundus<\/i>. About ten on both the 11th<\/sup> and 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  8. Black-tailed Gull<\/b> Larus crassirostris<\/i>. Fifty on the 11th<\/sup> and five on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  9. Vega Gull<\/b> Larus vegae<\/i>. Thirty on the 11th<\/sup> and five on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  10. Slaty-backed Gull<\/b> Larus schistisagus<\/i>. Two on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  11. Oriental Turtle Dove<\/b> Streptopelia orientalis<\/i>. 10+ on the 11th<\/sup>; two on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  12. Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker<\/b> Dendrocopos kizuki<\/i>. Probably ten on both dates.<\/li>\n
  13. White-backed Woodpecker<\/b> Dendrocopos leucotos<\/i>. One on the 11th<\/sup> and two on the 17th<\/sup>. Yet again, the impression is that these birds are noticeably stronger in the neck and bill than birds seen on Ulleung, with much more white in the upperparts.<\/li>\n

  15. Common Kestrel<\/b> Falco tinnunculus<\/i>. One on 11th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  16. Peregrine Falcon <\/b>Falco peregrinus<\/i>. Two on 11th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  17. Bull-headed Shrike<\/b> Lanius bucephalus<\/i>. Three on the 17th<\/sup>, including one preying on a parrotbill, taken from near the ground at a pre-roost.<\/li>\n
  18. Eurasian Jay<\/b> Garrulus glandarius<\/i>. Three on the 11th<\/sup> and two on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n

  19. Eurasian Magpie<\/b> Pica pica<\/i>. Present on the 11th<\/sup> and probably 25 on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  20. Large-billed Crow<\/b> Corvus macrorhynchos<\/i>. Four or five on both dates.<\/li>\n
  21. Coal Tit<\/b> Periparus ater<\/i>. Probably 10 on the 11th<\/sup> and 30+ on the 17th<\/sup> (with much larger area covered on the latter date).<\/li>\n

  22. Varied Tit<\/b> Sittiparus varius<\/i>. Probably ten on the 11th<\/sup> and 30 on the 17th<\/sup>, including one roosting in a street lamp. All birds that were seen well on both dates looked smaller- and blunter-billed than birds on Ulleung; showed clean orange and blue plumage tones, i.e. showed no admixing of rufous-orange into the upperpart blue; showed obvious paler creamy-rufous areas on the head, breast, and in many cases through the central breast and belly; and showed paler cream-rufous “spurs” when seen head-on.<\/li>\n

  23. Marsh Tit<\/b> Poecile palustris<\/i>. Two on the 11th<\/sup> and five on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  24. Eastern Great Tit<\/b> Parus minor<\/i>. Perhaps 30 on the 11th<\/sup> and 75 on the 17th<\/sup>. None gave the Marsh Tit<\/i>-type call heard on Ulleung earlier in the month.<\/li>\n
  25. Far Eastern Skylark<\/b> Alauda japonica<\/i>. One heard on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  26. Light-vented Bulbul<\/b> Pycnonotus sinensis<\/i>. Two on the 17th<\/sup>. Personal third record of this species in Busan, with previous records being singles in the Nakdong Estuary and in Igidae.<\/li>\n

  28. Japanese Bush Warbler<\/b> Horornis diphone<\/i>. Two on the 11th<\/sup> and three on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  29. Long-tailed Tit<\/b> Aegithalos caudatus<\/i>. 20+ on the 11th<\/sup> and 50+ on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  30. Vinous-throated Parrotbill<\/b> Sinosuthera webbiana<\/i>. 30+ on the 11th<\/sup> and >300 on the 17th<\/sup>, including one pre-roost of c.<\/i> 150 birds.<\/li>\n

  31. Japanese White-eye<\/b> Zosterops japonicus<\/i>. Twenty on the 11th<\/sup>, when seven gained height to depart south before dropping back into cover, and c.30 on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  32. Goldcrest <\/b>Regulus regulus<\/i>. Probably 15 on the 11th<\/sup> and 50+ on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  33. Eurasian Wren<\/b> Troglodytes troglodytes<\/i>. Three on the 11th<\/sup> and probably 15+ on the 17th<\/sup>, including two birds singing at each other.<\/li>\n
  34. White’s Thrush<\/b> Zoothera aurea<\/i>. One on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  35. Pale Thrush<\/b> Turdus pallidus<\/i>. Five on the 11th<\/sup> and 8-10 on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  36. Dusky Thrush<\/b> Turdus eunomus<\/i>. Three or more heard on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  37. Red-flanked Bluetail<\/b> Tarsiger cyanurus<\/i>. Three on the 11th<\/sup> (including one adult male) and perhaps 6-7 on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  38. Daurian Redstart<\/b> Phoenicurus auroreus<\/i>. Probably ten on the 11th<\/sup> and 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  39. Blue Rock Thrush<\/b> Monticola solitarius<\/i>. Two or three present on both dates.<\/li>\n
  40. Eurasian Tree Sparrow<\/b> Passer montanus<\/i>. 10+ on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  41. Siberian Accentor<\/b> Prunella montanella<\/i>. 5+ heard on the 11th<\/sup> and four (two seen) on the 17th<\/sup>. This species tends to be quite scarce in lowland areas of Busan and is usually absent from this park except during migration.<\/li>\n

  42. Grey Wagtail<\/b> Motacilla cinerea<\/i>. One on the 11th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n

  44. Olive-backed Pipit<\/b> Anthus hodgsoni<\/i>. Two or three on both dates.<\/li>\n
  45. Buff-bellied Pipit<\/b> Anthus rubescens<\/i>. Two on the 11th<\/sup> and one on the 17th<\/sup> – reduced numbers since the “beautification” of the open land near SK.<\/li>\n
  46. Brambling <\/b>Coelebs montifringilla<\/i>. Probably 30 on the 11th<\/sup> and five on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  47. Eurasian Bullfinch<\/b> Pyrrhula pyrrhula<\/i>. Three heard overhead on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  48. Grey-capped Greenfinch<\/b> Chloris sinica<\/i>. Five or so on the 11th<\/sup> and 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  49. Eurasian Siskin<\/b> Spinus spinus<\/i>. Probably 50 on the 11th<\/sup> and 20 on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  50. Rustic Bunting<\/b> Emberiza rustica<\/i>. Two heard on the 17th<\/sup>.<\/li>\n
  51. Yellow-throated Bunting<\/b> Emberiza elegans<\/i>. Probably 150 on the 11th<\/sup> and 100 on the 17th<\/sup>, including one moribund first-year with a large mite attached to its orbital eye-ring or eye.<\/li>\n
