{"id":12478,"date":"2014-05-02T20:13:54","date_gmt":"2014-05-02T11:13:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=12478"},"modified":"2014-05-28T22:53:33","modified_gmt":"2014-05-28T13:53:33","slug":"birdathon-news-from-nial-moores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=12478","title":{"rendered":"Birdathon News from Nial Moores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Baekryeong Island, April 30 (0935) &#8211; May 1 (0934!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the kind support of several donors (Park Young-Ja, Chon Hyun-ae, Profs. David Cole and Betty Slade) and the promise of some Canadian support through Birds Korean Geoff Styles, I chose Baekryeong as the obvious location for this year&#8217;s solo-effort foot-it birdathon challenge. This is an island with a great diversity of habitats (forest, farmland, freshwater wetland, tidal-flat and beach, and rich inshore waters), sitting within a major migration corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Starting at 0935 on April 30th (when there was a sudden surge in visible migration, including a personal first\u00a0<b>Common House Martin\u00a0<\/b>of the spring and several\u00a0<b>White-throated Needletails<\/b>) and continuing on to 0934 on May 1st, I spent 18 hours in the field and walked about 29km &#8211; from the north-east of the island to the far southwest. In total, I heard or saw at least <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">142 species<\/span>, almost all of them complete migrants. As I missed a few species that were on the island before starting, found several new spring arrivals within an hour of finishing (including\u00a0<b>Brown Shrike\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>Yellow Bunting),<\/b>\u00a0and left off a couple of probables (distant calling\u00a0<b>Asian Brown Flycatcher<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Swinhoe&#8217;s Snipe\u00a0<\/b>and one unknown caller &#8211; perhaps an owl) it seems that 150 plus really is possible here in a day&#8230;as long as adequate habitat remains.<\/p>\n<p>Notable moments during the Birdathon included flagging down a minibus carrying several local officials inspecting the proposed new road through the wetland (investing 15 worthwhile minutes trying to inform them of the high value of the site- exactly as two\u00a0<b>Purple Heron\u00a0<\/b>overflew us!); being followed for 15 minutes by a singing\u00a0<b>White&#8217;s Thrush\u00a0<\/b>at 4AM, close enough to hear the whoosh of its wings in the dark; hearing\u00a0<b>Little Whimbrel<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Grey-tailed Tattler<\/b>, displaying\u00a0<b>Little Ringed Plovers\u00a0<\/b>and frantic\u00a0<b>Far Eastern Oystercatchers\u00a0<\/b>all<b>\u00a0<\/b>before dawn-proper; and enjoying a large arrival of migrants in the far southwest, including the first and most timely\u00a0<b>Black-naped Oriole\u00a0<\/b>of the spring \/ summer at 0932 (species number 142).<\/p>\n<p>A complete list with a few images will be posted later.
