The journey was smooth over calm seas, but my own mood (and no doubt that of many others\u2019) was extraordinarily heavy. We left from the same building used by the\u00a0<i>Sewol<\/i>\u2019s doomed passengers only 10 days before. In the terminal now, the ferry timetable with\u00a0<i>Sewol<\/i>\u2019s name still; yellow ribbons on seats; post-it stickers sending love to lost friends and family; and televisions replaying that awful, surely avoidable sinking, half-watched by some of today\u2019s passengers \u2013 a few of whom drank coffee while others had their early morning beers. Leaving the port, outside access was strictly forbidden while at sea &#8211; according to the safety announcement &#8211; but was nonetheless permitted once an hour or so for people to go out for a smoke. When will actions match words?<\/p>\n<p>From inside, most numerous birds seen at sea were\u00a0<b>Black-tailed Gull<\/b>\u00a0(290) and\u00a0<b>Ancient Murrelet<\/b>\u00a0(59) with the highlight a\u00a0<b>Yellow-billed Loon<\/b>\u00a0in heavy moult, rowing away from our passing ship.<\/p>\n<p>On Baekryeong itself, as a warm-up for this year\u2019s Birdathon (still time for sponsors to support, please!..), a total of 112 species logged in the first 24 hours on the island, with less than a third of the island covered (all on foot). No flycatchers and few warblers were logged (likely because of the past week\u2019s dry weather) and species of most note included a\u00a0<b>Black-faced Spoonbill<\/b>\u00a0in the main marsh at Hwadong (a key habitat now threatened by yet-more road construction: more on this to be posted later), single\u00a0<b>Chinese Blackbird<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Japanese Waxwing<\/b>, a flock of 57<b>Red-throated Pipit<\/b>\u00a0feeding in one ploughed field at Sagot, three\u00a0<b>Japanese Quail<\/b>, and at least four\u00a0<b>Pechora Pipit<\/b>overhead on the 26<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0(with the early date suggesting\u00a0<i>menzbieri<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Black-faced-Spoonbill_NM.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[12387]\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[NM]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12388\" alt=\"Black-faced-Spoonbill_NM\" src=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Black-faced-Spoonbill_NM-e1398595276570.jpg\" width=\"590\" height=\"443\" \/><\/a>Black-faced Spoonbill<\/b>\u00a0<i>Platalea minor<\/i>, \u00a9 Nial Moores<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chinese-Blackbird_NM.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[12387]\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[NM]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chinese-Blackbird_NM-e1398595524341.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese-Blackbird_NM\" width=\"590\" height=\"443\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12392\" \/><\/a><b>Chinese Blackbird<\/b>\u00a0<i>Turdus merula<\/i>, \u00a9 Nial Moores<\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bird News from Nial Moores After a day\u2019s delay due to fog, the ferry departed Incheon for Baekryeong.
