\nBird News from Matt Poll<\/strong><\/p>\n

On a blustery day filled with low scudding clouds and rough seas, there was some interesting movement and turnover on Mara-do. Although most birds were perhaps sheltering from the winds, and despite the fact that I only had an hour on the island, there were some birds about. The feeling was decidedly different from the previous week, with winter birds clearing out, and more migrants and breeders moving through.
\n Notable on Jeju\u2019s nearby mainland were several Garganey<\/strong> mixed in with Spot-billed Duck<\/strong> and Eurasian Teal<\/strong>. Also, Barn Swallows<\/strong> have returned in force.<\/p>\n

1.\tBlack-crowned Night Heron<\/strong> Nycticorax nycticorax<\/em>; presumably the same three individuals from last weekend
\n2.\tPeregrine Falcon<\/strong> Falco peregrinus<\/em>; one prowling the rocks where tired migrants often shelter
\n3.\tEurasian Woodcock<\/strong> Scolopax rusticola<\/em>; one flushed silently in front of me, flying straight and low \u2013 noticeably larger than snipes, with large \u2018kestrel-colored\u2019 rump very evident
\n4.\tBlack-tailed Gull<\/strong> Larus crassirostris<\/em>
\n5.\tPacific Swift<\/strong> Apus Pacificus<\/em>; at least 30 engaged in aerial ballet low over the island
\n6.\tEurasian Magpie<\/strong> Pica pica<\/em>
\n7.\tGreat Tit<\/strong> Parus major<\/em>
\n8.\tFar Eastern Skylark<\/strong> Alauda japonica<\/em>
\n9.\tBarn Swallow<\/strong> Hirundo Rustica<\/em>;
\n10.\tJapanese Bush Warbler<\/strong> Horornis diphone<\/em>
\n11.\tJapanese White-eye <\/strong>Zosterops japonicus<\/em>
\n12.\tWhite-cheeked Starling<\/strong> Spodiopsar cineraceus<\/em>
\n13.\tWhite\u2019s Thrush<\/strong> Zoothera aurea<\/em>; one in the woods with a Pale Thrush
\n14.\tPale Thrush<\/strong> Turdus pallidus<\/em>
\n15.\tStejneger\u2019s Stonechat<\/strong> Saxicola stejnegeri<\/em>; one in a grassy field
\n16.\tDaurian Redstart<\/strong> Phoenicurus auroreus<\/em>
\n17.\tWhite Wagtail<\/strong> Motacilla alba<\/em>
