Bird News from Tim Edelsten<\/strong><\/p>\n

Predictably, development has come to this picturesque and sunny port, and they have built a park with railings over an area of rocks formerly used by the birds to feed. A look at the harbour and neighbouring beaches found the following:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Brant Goose<\/b>\u00a0Branta bernicla<\/i>. Three in the harbour. There used to be more here in winter but they have concreted over the rocks they used to feed on.<\/li>\n
  2. Eurasian Wigeon<\/b>\u00a0Anas penelope<\/i>. 17 feeding on seaweed in the shallows and rock pools.<\/li>\n
  3. Mallard<\/b>\u00a0Anas platyrhynchos<\/i>. Ten or so. Always unusual to see them in the sea rather than on freshwater.<\/li>\n
  4. Eastern Spot-billed Duck<\/b>\u00a0Anas zonorhyncha<\/i>. Several species of anatidae typically associated with inland freshwater seem to be distributed in marine areas the length of the east coast.<\/li>\n
  5. Common Pochard<\/b>\u00a0Aythya ferina<\/i>. Two in the harbour.<\/li>\n
  6. Greater Scaup<\/b>\u00a0Aythya marila<\/i>. Five or six diving in the harbour.<\/li>\n
  7. Harlequin Duck<\/b>\u00a0Histrionicus histrionicus<\/i>. Two off the north beach.<\/li>\n
  8. Red-breasted Merganser<\/b>\u00a0Mergus serrator<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  9. Red-necked Grebe<\/b>\u00a0Podiceps grisegena<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  10. Black-necked Grebe<\/b>\u00a0Podiceps nigricollis<\/i>. Four.<\/li>\n
  11. Temminck’s Cormorant<\/b>\u00a0Phalacrocorax capillatus<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  12. Sanderling<\/b>\u00a0Calidris alba<\/i>. Ten or so along the south beach.<\/li>\n
  13. Black-legged Kittiwake<\/b>\u00a0Rissa tridactyla<\/i>. Four or five in the port.<\/li>\n

  14. Black-tailed Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus crassirostris<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  15. Common Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus canus<\/i>. Two or three present.<\/li>\n
  16. Glaucous-winged Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus glaucescens<\/i>. One in the port.<\/li>\n
  17. Glaucous Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus hyperboreus<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  18. American Herring Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus smithsonianus<\/i>. One potential sighting under consideration. One or two have been reported here since January 22nd at least.<\/li>\n
  19. Vega Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus vegae<\/i>. There seems to be a huge amount of individual variation within this species in terms of build, streaking, bill size, eye and leg colour, and overall structure. No two gulls look the same!<\/li>\n
  20. Caspian Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus cachinnans<\/i>. One or two possible individuals showed features of this type, including long flesh-colored legs, mostly white head with gradually sloping forehead, longish bill lacking obvious gonys angle, and upright stance.<\/li>\n

  21. Slaty-backed Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus schistisagus<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  22. Taimyr Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus heuglini taimyrensis<\/i>. Up to ten on the south beach. Once again, a lot of variation within this group- some quite powerfully built, others shorter and smaller.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
