Bird News from Tim Edelsten<\/strong><\/p>\n

Again at Eungbong, but the main attraction – the Ferruginous Duck – has left. There remains an assortment of waterfowl, which seem a bit different to previous years, including the following:<\/p>\n

  1. Greater White-fronted Goose<\/b>\u00a0Anser albifrons<\/i>. One lost-looking juvenile is the first I have seen here.<\/li>\n
  2. Ruddy Shelduck<\/b>\u00a0Tadorna ferruginea<\/i>. Eight. This is the first winter that they’ve appeared here.<\/li>\n
  3. Mandarin Duck<\/b>\u00a0Aix galericulata<\/i>. 129 counted. In unusually high numbers here this year.<\/li>\n
  4. Mallard<\/b>\u00a0Anas platyrhynchos<\/i>. (Photographed).<\/li>\n
  5. Eurasian Teal<\/b>\u00a0Anas crecca<\/i>. (Photographed).<\/li>\n
  6. Common Pochard<\/b>\u00a0Aythya ferina<\/i>. 1400 at the mouth of the stream.<\/li>\n
  7. Tufted Duck<\/b>\u00a0Aythya fuligula<\/i>. 800 at the confluence-avoiding the area which was dredged last year.<\/li>\n
  8. Little Grebe<\/b>\u00a0Tachybaptus ruficollis<\/i>. Three: another apparent first record for this site.<\/li>\n
  9. Great Crested Grebe<\/b>\u00a0Podiceps cristatus<\/i>. 11 where the stream meets the Han. Another species I’ve never seen here previously.<\/li>\n
  10. Great Cormorant<\/b>\u00a0Phalacrocorax carbo<\/i>. There were 5-600 here on the 1st. An unprecedented number for this site.<\/li>\n
  11. Peregrine Falcon<\/b>\u00a0Falco peregrinus<\/i>. One 1Y bird. Rarely recorded in the Seoul city area.<\/li>\n
  12. Eurasian Coot<\/b>\u00a0Fulica atra<\/i>. Three -a scarce record for this particular site.<\/li>\n
  13. Common Sandpiper<\/b>\u00a0Actitis hypoleucos<\/i>. One.<\/li>\n
  14. Vega Gull<\/b>\u00a0Larus vegae<\/i>. One contrasting clearly with the 20 or so Mongolian Gulls. Unusual to see one so far inland.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
