Bird News by Patrick Blake and Jason Loghry<\/p>\n

Mr. Jason Loghry and I surveyed the area around Naju and Haenam County in southern Jeollanam-do. The weather was clear skies throughout the day, with a continuous light wind in Haenam; despite the sunlight, it was still quite cold and standing in one place for a long time was not to be the order of the day.<\/p>\n

We covered a lot of ground and were rewarded with some fantastic birds for our efforts. A complete list of the days sightings is below. A total of 49 species were observed throughout the day.<\/p>\n

1. Taiga Bean Goose<\/strong> Anser fabalis<\/em>
\n2. Tundra Bean Goose<\/strong> Anser serrirostris<\/em>
\n3. Greater White-fronted Goose<\/strong> Anser albifrons<\/em>; c. 2,000-3,000 birds around Gocheonnam Lake in Haenam – both the nominate and A. a. frontalis<\/em> subspecies were represented
\n4. Lesser White-fronted Goose<\/strong> Anser erythopus<\/em>; 7+, observed hidden in with the Greater White-fronted Geese
\n5. Common Shelduck<\/strong> Tadorna tadorna<\/em>
\n6. Gadwall<\/strong> Anas strepera<\/em>
\n7. Eurasian Wigeon<\/strong> Anas penelope<\/em>
\n8. Mallard<\/strong> Anas platyrhynchos<\/em>
\n9. Eastern Spot-billed Duck<\/strong> Anas zonorhyncha<\/em>
\n10. Northern Pintail<\/strong> Anas acuta<\/em>
\n11. Common Teal<\/strong> Anas crecca<\/em>
\n12. Common Merganser<\/strong> Mergus merganser<\/em>
\n13. Red-breasted Merganser<\/strong> Mergus serrator<\/em>
\n14. Scaly-sided Merganser<\/strong> Mergus squamata<\/em>
\n15. Little Grebe<\/strong> Tachybaptus ruficollis<\/em>
\n16. Great Crested Grebe<\/strong> Podiceps cristatus<\/em>
\n17. Grey Heron<\/strong> Ardea cinerea<\/em>
\n18. Eastern Great Egret<\/strong> Ardea modesta<\/em>
\n19. Great Cormorant<\/strong> Phalacrocorax carbo<\/em>
\n20. Cinereous Vulture<\/strong> Aegypius monachus<\/em>
\n21. Eastern Marsh Harrier<\/strong> Circus spilonotus<\/em>
\n22. Hen Harrier<\/strong> Circus cyaneus<\/em>; included a beautiful adult male
\n23. Eastern Buzzard<\/strong> Buteo japonicus<\/em>; very numerous
