{"id":11486,"date":"2014-01-04T10:20:42","date_gmt":"2014-01-04T01:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=11486"},"modified":"2014-01-04T20:31:07","modified_gmt":"2014-01-04T11:31:07","slug":"seoul-december-31-january-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/?p=11486","title":{"rendered":"Seoul, December 31 &#8211; January 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bird News from Matt Poll and Tim Edelsten<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>December 31, Namhansan (MP only)<br \/>\n  On a hazy and relatively warm last day of 2013, I visited the peaceful hills around Hyeonjeolsa Temple on Namhansan, in Seoul\u2019s southeast.  It was a treat to see a variety of birds I don\u2019t get to see on Jeju, such as confiding single-digit numbers of <strong>Marsh Tit<\/strong>, <strong>Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker<\/strong>, <strong>Great Spotted Woodpecker<\/strong>, <strong>Eurasian Nuthatch<\/strong>, as well as perhaps a dozen <strong>Naumann\u2019sThrush<\/strong>, several <strong>Dusky Thrush<\/strong> (with an apparent Dusky x Naumann\u2019s hybrid), and a <strong>Goldcrest<\/strong>.  Several <strong>Great Tit<\/strong>, <strong>Varied Tit<\/strong>, <strong>Brambling<\/strong>, <strong>Large-billed Crow<\/strong>, and an <strong>Eastern Buzzard<\/strong> were also seen.  Unfortunately I was unable to see a Hazel Grouse, in spite of hearing one.<\/p>\n<p>January 1, stream near Eungbong Station, (with Tim Edelsten)<br \/>\n  There was a nice assortment of ducks on a small stretch of river feeding into the Han, with most regular winter ducks represented.  Notable were about 150 <strong>Mandarin Ducks<\/strong>, remarkable for this site.  The star attraction was a cracking male <strong>Ferruginous Duck<\/strong>, looking spectacular as it swam lazily in the sun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/marsh-tit2.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[11486]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.birdskoreablog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/marsh-tit2-640x300.jpg\" alt=\"marsh tit2\" width=\"640\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-11491\" \/><\/a>  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"> Marsh Tit <em>Poecile palustris<\/em>.
