Clear weather and relative warmth in Cheolweon; patchy snow on the ground and thin ice on the larger streams and ponds. Highlights from the afternoon of Nov. 30: about 100\u00a0<b>White-naped Cranes<\/b>\u00a0and 30\u00a0<b>Red-crowned Cranes<\/b>, mostly in small \u201cfamily groups\u201d of 3 or 4. One brief\u00a0<b>Upland Buzzard<\/b>\u00a0and a few slow-circling\u00a0<b>Eastern Buzzards<\/b>. Even slower, 4\u00a0<b>Cinereous Vultures<\/b>. Also 2\u00a0<b>Common Kestrels<\/b>\u00a0and a\u00a0<b>Eurasian Sparrowhawk<\/b>. Several\u00a0<b>Common Pheasants<\/b>. One distant skein of\u00a0<b>Bean Geese<\/b>\u00a0and a few flocks (c.500 and 200 birds) of\u00a0<b>White-fronted Geese<\/b>. On So-i-San, several\u00a0<b>Great Tits<\/b>, 3\u00a0<b>Yellow-throated Buntings<\/b>, a\u00a0<b>Eurasian Nuthatch<\/b>, and a very welcome male and female\u00a0<b>Pallas\u2019 Rosefinch<\/b>. Also from the car\u2014a fast drive-by\/fly-by flock over the fields of likely (from structure and flight)\u00a0<b>Lapland Longspurs<\/b>\u2014at least 100.<\/p>\n<p>The morning of the 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0dawned very foggy: rising temperatures meeting snow and ice. A stop at the heavily shrouded lake hinted at many hundreds of geese on the water, Beans and White-fronts both; about 60\u00a0<b>Mallards<\/b>\u00a0swam within sight and a single\u00a0<b>Whooper Swan<\/b>\u00a0flew out of the murk.
