On the island, little evidence of incoming or newly-arrived birds. Two <b>Bull-headed Shrikes<\/b>. Several <b>Stejneger\u2019s Stonechats<\/b>. Three <b>Black-browed Reed Warbler<\/b>s. Seven <b>White-cheeked<\/b> and one <b>Common Starling<\/b>. Five <b>Japanese Quails<\/b>. A <b>Japanese Sparrowhawk<\/b>. A <b>Eurasian Sparrowhawk<\/b>. A <b>Eastern Buzzard<\/b>. A couple of <b>Yellow-browed Reed Warbler<\/b>s. A small flock of <b>Siskins<\/b>. An even smaller group of <b>Bramblings<\/b>. Five or so <b>Light-vented Bulbuls<\/b>. A couple each of <b>Olive-backed<\/b> and<b> Buff-bellied Pipits<\/b>. Small numbers of <b>Chestnut<\/b>, <b>Chestnut-eared<\/b>, <b>Black-faced<\/b>, <b>Little,<\/b> <b>Rustic<\/b> and <b>Yellow-throated Buntings<\/b>. Two <b>Greater Short-toed Larks<\/b>. Four <b>Oriental Honey Buzzard<\/b>s. A <b>Peregrine Falcon<\/b>. Several <b>White Wagtails<\/b> (one a rather interesting \u201cblack-backed\u201d type) and a <b>Grey Wagtail<\/b>. Eight <b>Japanese White-eyes<\/b>. A probable (on call) overhead <b>Blyth\u2019s Pipit<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><i>24th<\/i><br \/>\nVery high winds, making viewing difficult. One <b>Black Kite<\/b>. Some broken trees! Several <b>Eurasian Skylarks<\/b>. A <b>Greenfinch<\/b>. A <b>Goldcrest<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><i>26th<\/i><br \/>\nAgain, high winds \u2013 more gusts than steady \u2014 and no ferry. The steep and narrow path from behind the school up the mountain yielded few birds (a <b>Goldcrest<\/b>, a <b>Bull-headed Shrike<\/b>, an <b>Oriental Honey Buzzard<\/b>, some <b>Yellow-throated Buntings<\/b>) but one real surprise: an apparent hen <b>Pheasant<\/b> bursting from cover among trees near the path just beneath the crest and flying rapidly into much deeper cover. The bird did not call, and had an oddly square-looking tail. A small flock <b>of Red-rumped Swallows<\/b> overhead. In the morning, a brief glimpse of a <b>Yellow Bittern<\/b> above the quarry. Three <b>Slavonian Grebes<\/b> in the harbor. On the trek to 2-gu, <b>Pale Thrushes<\/b> (some seen, most heard) one or two <b>Dusky Thrushes<\/b> (heard) and a likely <b>Naumann\u2019s Thrush<\/b> (also heard only). Small overhead flocks of <b>Siskins<\/b> and <b>Bramblings<\/b>. An attractively chunky <b>Peregrine<\/b> patrolling the ridge. One distant calling <b>Rubythroat<\/b>. A briefly calling <b>Taiga Flycatcher<\/b>. Numbers of scolding <b>Japanese Bush Warblers<\/b>. A pair of Gageo\u2019s distinctive (in color and call) <b>Varied Tits<\/b>.
