Bird News from Tim Edelsten<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a multi-billion won “bird centre” is built at one end of the lake, the other end has become a construction site for a rail cart track, erasing the former reedbed in the process. Huddled in the corner furthest from the disturbance, some of the usual birds could still be found:<\/p>\n

  1. Mallard<\/b> Anas platyrhynchos<\/i>. Four.<\/li>\n
  2. Eastern Spot-billed Duck<\/b> Anas zonorhyncha<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  3. Eurasian Teal<\/b> Anas crecca<\/i>. Six, in eclipse.<\/li>\n
  4. Great Crested Grebe<\/b> Podiceps cristatus<\/i>. Sixteen, including eight locally-raised juveniles.<\/li>\n
  5. Black-crowned Night Heron<\/b> Nycticorax nycticorax<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  6. Eastern Cattle Egret <\/b>Bubulcus coromandus<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  7. Grey Heron <\/b>Ardea cinerea<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  8. Great Egret <\/b>Ardea alba<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  9. Intermediate Egret <\/b>Egretta intermedia.<\/b><\/i><\/li>\n
  10. Little Egret<\/b> Egretta garzetta.<\/b><\/i><\/li>\n
  11. Great Cormorant <\/b>Phalacrocorax carbo<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  12. Common Moorhen<\/b> Gallinula chloropus<\/i>. Six, including two juveniles.<\/li>\n
  13. Eurasian Coot <\/b>Fulica atra<\/i>. Eleven included at least one juvenile.<\/li>\n
  14. Common Snipe<\/b> Gallinago gallinago<\/i>. Six. Almost always call when taking flight.<\/li>\n
  15. Wood Sandpiper<\/b> Tringa glareola<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  16. Common Sandpiper <\/b>Actitis hypoleucos<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  17. Temminck’s Stint<\/b> Calidris temminckii<\/i>. Three feeding together. Very inconspicuous and unobtrusive. This species is probably much overlooked due to the fact they are so well camoflaged against mud and move so slowly.<\/li>\n
  18. Black-tailed Gull<\/b> Larus crassirostris<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  19. Oriental Turtle Dove <\/b>\u00a0Streptopelia orientalis<\/i>. 100+ in the ricefields.<\/li>\n
  20. Great Spotted Woodpecker<\/b> Dendrocopos major<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  21. Azure-winged Magpie <\/b>Cyanopica cyanus<\/i>. One seen and another calling from the bushes with its typical “clockwork toy” sound. Probably a first for this site.<\/li>\n
  22. Eurasian Magpie<\/b> Pica sericea<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  23. Large-billed Crow<\/b> Corvus macrorhynchos<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  24. Eastern Great Tit<\/b>\u00a0 Parus minor<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  25. Brown-eared Bulbul<\/b> Hypsipetes amaurotis<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  26. Yellow-browed Warbler<\/b> Phylloscopus inornatus<\/i>. Two heard.<\/li>\n
  27. Oriental Reed Warbler<\/b> Acrocephalus orientalis<\/i>. One seen clumsily crashing through the stems with its “ting” call, presumably trying to draw attention away from its fledglings.<\/li>\n
  28. Vinous-throated Parrotbill<\/b> Sinosuthera webbiana<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  29. Eurasian Tree Sparrow<\/b> Passer montanus<\/i>.<\/li>\n
  30. Grey Wagtail<\/b> Motacilla cinerea<\/i>. Two adults and a juvenile.<\/li>\n
  31. White Wagtail<\/b> Motacilla alba<\/i>. One leucopsis<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Plentiful butterflies included the Large Copper<\/b> Lycaena dispar<\/i>, Short-tailed Blue<\/b> Everes argiades<\/i> and Argus <\/b>Lycaeides argyrognomon<\/i><\/p>\n
