B.I.R.D.S. Club: Our First Walk

Jason Loghry & Min Seung-Eun, Jun 23
Obang Elementary School

Our new birding club took our first walk together to observe birds near our school grounds. The name of our club is B.I.R.D.S., which stands for Bird Identification & Research Discovery Society. We have twelve members, all in the 6th grade. All of our members are interested in learning more about birds. One of our goals is to learn what birds are in our neighborhood and how to identify them.

On Friday, we split into two groups, one taking a walk in the morning and the other taking a walk in the afternoon. Both walks were a lot of fun. Students took notes about the different birds they saw and some students drew pictures. Here are the species we observed:

  1. 딱새 Daurian Redstart Phoenicurus auroreus (8), including three juveniles in different places

  2. 직박구리 Brown-eared Bulbul Hypsipetes amaurotis (3), one bird was singing from the same tree in the morning and in the afternoon

  3. 박새 Eastern Great Tit Parus minor (3), heard singing; two juveniles seen in the afternoon

  4. 까치 Eurasian Magpie Pica pica (5)

  5. 붉은머리오목눈이 Vinous-throated Parrotbill Sinosuthera webbiana, a few heard singing but not seen

  6. 큰부리까마귀 Large-billed Crow Corvus macrorhynchos (7), seen in the morning and afternoon on electrical wires and light poles

  7. 참새 Eurasian Tree Sparrow Passer montanus (11), seen in the afternoon including juveniles

  8. 멧비둘기 Oriental Turtle Dove Streptopelia orientalis (at least 3), including one only heard

  9. 꾀꼬리 Black-naped Oriole Oriolus chinensis (2), one heard and one seen in flight

  10. 황조롱이 Common Kestrel Falco tinnunculus (1), one heard first and then seen flying

  11. 동박새 Japanese White-eye Zosterops japonicus (3), heard and seen in the afternoon

  12. 뻐꾸기 Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus (1), heard singing in the morning and afternoon

  13. 꿩 Common Pheasant Phasianus colchicus (1), heard in the morning and afternoon

  14. 파랑새 Oriental Dollarbird Eurystomus orientalis (2), two heard and seen in flight in the morning. Most interesting was our afternoon record, when we found a Dollarbird sitting in a Magpie’s nest high up in a tree.
