Namhansan, March 26

Bird News from Robin Newlin with Im Kwang Wan and Chinmay Rahane

We met up in front of the usual bakery and went to Namhansan, where we met Jo Seong Sik, Park Im Ja, and, soon after, a pair of Brown Dippers along a small stream and dam. Also in the stream area: Rustic and Yellow-throated Buntings, a pair of Daurian Redstarts, Marsh and Long-tailed Tits, a Grey Wagtail, and an overhead pair of Eastern Buzzards.

After a dubu lunch, IKW, CR and I headed up to a traditional site for Hazel Grouse; we saw one and heard possibly two more. CR spotted a Water Deer and we all saw Chipmunks. Also in the area: Eurasian Jays; Marsh, Great and Varied Tits; Rustic and Yellow-throated Buntings, Eurasian Nuthatches, Great Spotted and White-backed Woodpeckers, Vinous-throated Parrotbills, and Bramblings. IKW glimpsed a san toki (Korean Hare–Lepus coreanus?)–a rare sight these days. On the way out, near the car park, we were ushered out by a flock of about a dozen Azure-winged Magpies.
