Green-winged Teal, Siheung, December 3

Bird News from Nial Moores

With a presentation to give in Seoul in the evening, a chance on December 3rd to spend an hour and a half visiting the tidal creek at Siheung to look for the long-staying male Green-winged Teal. Although the weather was very poor, with rain and mist, the bird showed reasonably well, walking rapidly over the mud, sometimes to feed, sometimes (it appeared) to avoid the advances of an especially persistent female!

As my own record shots are so poor, am delighted to share a couple of (stunning) images taken by Dr Shim Kyu-Sik two days earlier, used here with his kind permission:

Efforts are being made to refine details of this record (i.e. who first found this individual and when), presumably in this part of the country for the second winter (at least).  Any comments to that effect are most welcome!

Also at the same quite birdy site, single Chinese Grey Shrike and Eurasian Spoonbill, probable Ochre-rumped Bunting, 2-3 Pallas’s Reed and 10+ Common Reed Buntings, 170 Brambling and at least five highly unseasonal ocularis White Wagtail.
