Deokjeok Island, April 5th

Bird News from Subhojit Chakladar (with Minseon Zee)

A quick day trip to Deokjeok to check the status of migration. It rained most of the time (rather lightly). Only the hiking trail from the harbor to the school was covered due to the weather conditions. Right at the beginning of the trail, a group of Long-tailed Tits were encountered. About half a dozen birds, it contained a single caudatus. There were 2 Bramblings, including one in breeding plumage. A Eurasian Sparrowhawk was also encountered close by. The remainder of the trail was rather quiet except for a calling Great Spotted Woodpecker. Once out of the trial and on the beach, a flock of about 2 dozens Bramblings were encountered flying around. The rice fields close to the school had 3 Rooks. The nearby power lines had about 30 White-cheeked Starlings. We also encountered the first Barn Swallow of this year. Wagtails were very active and vocal. 4 White and 2 Grey Wagtails were seen. A Common Crossbill was first seen at a distance. The bird flew as soon as I brought out my camera. There were a lot of Dusky Thrushes.
